The experimental nature of the Zelda series has proven to be a double-edged sword throughout the years. Since the N64 era, just about each subsequent entry has boasted its own set of unique mechanics. Whether it’s Majora’s masks, Twilight Princess’ wolf, or Spirit Tracks’ train, these elements have helped distinguish each game from its brethren.

Indeed, this philosophy has served Link’s adventures well. Without such dramatic shakeups in terms of setting and motifs, it’s unlikely the series would remain as fresh as it has. However, there is a tradeoff to this somewhat fickle approach. For as fleshed out as these one-off mechanics typically are, I do occasionally lament their absence in the games that follow.

It’s a testament to the games’ creativity when such core gameplay elements leave the player wanting more. Of course, some have greater potential than others. That said, whenever I think about which features I’d love to see return in a future Zelda game, my mind most frequently turns to The Minish Cap’s shrinking ability. It’s a simple concept, yet one with seemingly limitless possibilities. To see it brought into a 3D, mainline entry — especially in an open-world setting similar to Breath of the Wild’s — would be such a dream come true.

What about you, though? Among all the one-and-done gameplay elements the Zelda series has introduced, which one do you hope to see again the most? Perhaps Skyward Sword’s motion controls warrant further exploration? What about A Link Between Worlds’ wall merging? In any case, let us know in the comments below!
