It’s undeniable that music plays an integral role within the Zelda franchise. From the sweeping melody that is the main theme, to the dour dirge that you’re met with when confronting Ganon, there’s a track that will appeal to everyone. Having just recently wrapped up another annual playthrough of my all-time favorite entry, A Link to the Past, I was reminded of a particular arrangement that affects me on a deeper level than any other in the series.

To put things into context, when you finish A Link to the Past, you’re greeted with a bombastic fanfare that emphasizes your triumph over the forces of darkness. The clashing of cymbals, pounding of drums, and echo of horns generate a level of gravitas befitting a celebration for the hero of Hyrule. It’s a great piece to be sure, but it’s what comes after that I feel supersedes all other contenders.

The screen dims to black and returns with the Triforce’s three parts spinning in slow unison. The mountain range behind them is illuminated by the red glow of dawn before transitioning to day. All the while, simulated string, wind, brass, and percussion instruments ebb and flow, bringing with them a calming sense of fulfillment. The quest is over and I’m able to bask in my accomplishments.

As the music slowly crescendos, I’m always reminded of my own life. Of times gone by, those that I’ve lost, and the journey that I’ve had thus far. The consonance of this piece brings my nostalgia to a fever pitch before the denouement finally hits, bringing me back to my senses. It’s for these reasons that I feel the credits theme to A Link to the Past has the most emotional impact on me.
