The Legend of Zelda series is no stranger to taking the lives of some of its pivotal characters, like Mikau in Majora’s Mask or King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule in The Wind Waker. But would it go so far as to kill off its two biggest names? In a recent theory video, the minds behind Commonwealth Realm say yes. With Breath of the Wild 2 being potentially darker than Majora’s Mask, a stunning loss of this kind is a harrowing possibility.

The theory argues that the bond between Link and Zelda that helped them defeat Calamity Ganon in the first Breath of the Wild could be their undoing in the sequel. Them fighting side-by-side this closely is unusual, as the two are usually either adventuring separately or Link is tasked with rescuing Zelda. Even in final battles with Ganon, if Zelda is present, she’s often assisting with arrows outside of confines of the sword fight. Working in such close proximity could result in a sacrifice by either of the parties, or put them both in grave danger as opposed to just one of them. And this new antagonist may be more governed by chaotic energy than any goal of obtaining power, which may make it ruthless in battle.

I for one don’t believe Link and Zelda will die in Breath of the Wild 2. Though it would be interesting, if the game does allow players to switch between the two, for the final battle to result in the death of whichever character the player is not controlling. Then again, if Zelda were to die right there in the cave where the game’s big-bad awakens, that would quickly establish its darker tone.

What do you think of this theory? Do you think losing one or both of our protagonists would serve the story well or make it too dark? Share your thoughts in the comments!
