The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages may not be your go-to thought when you hear “Zelda,” but they are some darn fine games nonetheless. Some would go so far to call them the best top-down Zelda games yet. Not too long ago, Nintendo announced the rerelease of both classic Game Boy Color titles for the 3DS’s Virtual Console service, and two weeks ago they gave us two new trailers to boot!

Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages take our favorite green-clad hero to new different lands called Holodrum and Labrynna, respectively. Depending on which version you get (if not both) you’ll be enjoying a game rife with action, puzzles, collectibles, and plot, among other things. Perhaps the most famous feature of the Oracle games is its password system, which allows players to transport items between games and even unlock the duology’s true ending.

Don’t forget that Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages release for Virtual Console through the 3DS eShop on May 30th, which is just two days away. Are you going to be picking up one of these fun-filled Game Boy Color classics?

Let’s talk about stories. To those of you familiar with my article work on this site, you will know that I have a deep passion for storytelling, and specifically, story structure. I’ve written about the monomyth — or, as it is more commonly called, the “Hero’s Journey” — and how this literary phenomenon is reflected within the Zelda series. I’ve talked at length about Joseph Campbell’s theories and their pertinence to both the series and video gaming at large. It…

I’m happy to announce that this project has just about reached its completion and almost the entire walkthrough is now online. The only part not included at this point is the Linked Game section that happens in a second quest of Oracle of Seasons. With Oracle of Seasons now completed, we are quickly working to bring up…

As Zelda fans, we have undoubtedly been subject to the greatest variety in art style and graphics in a single video game series. We’ve seen 2D, cel-shaded, 3D, 2D cel-shaded, realistic, impressionistic, and variations of those listed. People always have very different opinions on which one is the best and why. So that’s what I’m here to discuss. I shall explain each art style or graphics implemented by each game, and then you can simply pick which one is your…

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. It feels like a millennium has passed since having last touched the two games, since having last felt the majesty of playing what is now often forgotten by some of my peers.  Yet, these two games have endured for more than a decade in my mind and heart. Regardless of what I may think of either game in itself there has always been a lingering feeling in the back of my mind, that of something not quite complete.

Despite how ridiculous that may have seemed, it was nevertheless a prevailing thought whenever either game was mentioned.  To the left is an image released by Did You Know Gaming illustrating how originally, Nintendo intended to make an additional game Legend of Zelda: Mystical Seed of Courage in order to complete a “Triforce Trilogy” with the prior titles.

It was meant to form a trilogy…

There are a variety of different enemies in the Zelda series that are constantly changing. But, some enemies have been in the series for almost all of the games and have changed dramatically between games. One of these enemies is the stalfos. I’m not going to lie, when I played my first Zelda game; this enemy killed me about ten times because it was so hard being a new Zelda player (Skyward Sword). But after doing more extensive research, I’ve…
