Skyward Sword: The Many Shields Of Link

I hope you guys have been watching and reading the exclusive content coming from Game Informer. If you have then you may of noticed that there have been a variety of shields Link carries. It is clear that most of the shields are obtained via the upgrading system, however it is still unclear if certain shields can be bought instead of upgraded.

The first shield that we can see is the one to the left. This sheild is pretty basic. This metal shield is rectangular and has two talon symbols opposite each other. From what I can make out from the shield gauge, this shield has low endurance but has good surface area. This shield looks like it can be obtained at the beginning of the game. Jump in to see more shields.

Next we have another metal shield. This one is bigger and has a kite shape. It has a white thick rim with some sort of sun design at the top, at the sides it has yellow wings and the sheild is checkered purple. This seems to have good endurance and bigger surface area, making this an all around sheild. It is possible that this shield could be the first version of the hylian shield since it has a similar design and colour scheme.

This shield is either an upgrade or downgrade to the previous shield. It’s hard to tell from just looking at the pictures but if you look closely, they have the same colour scheme and shape, but with a different design, so this proves it’s the same shield. However this sheild has a bird figure at the top of the sheild which looks like it has been wielded on and it has a bird’s talon in the center of the sheild. Like the previous shield, it seems to have good endurance and good surface area.

Next we have the wooden shield which we have seen in the E3 and TGS gameplay trailers. This looks like the very first shield you will obtain at the beginning of the game since most Zelda games have a tradition of starting off with or finding a wooden sheild. This circular shield is made up of 6 pieces of wood which have been stapled to keep the shield secure and has a talon painted on the surface. One downfall to this shield, as you might of guessed with some previous wooden shields, is that it’s vulnerable to fire based attacks and will burn completely. Other than this, it has good endurance.

This next shield has been confirmed to be the upgrade to the previous wooden shield. Unlike the other shields that we’ve seen in this article, this shield has a name, which is the banded shield. This shield has a metal rim and has what looks to be wings as the symbol. This shield has a better surface area and it looks more endurable. Though it has a metal rim, but it is still vulnerable to fire based attacks.

Last but not least, the shield that has been with us in previous Zelda games, the hylian shield. The hylian shield has been confirmed to be the strongest shield in Skyward Sword. It looks like you need to upgrade the purple metal shield to obtain the hylian shield. Compared to the other shields, the hylian shield has a very good surface area and has max endurance. It has a similar same design as the hylian shield in Twilight Princess, only more saturated and beautifully detailed and additionaly the frame around the triforce was not included.

And those are the shields we have seen so far. Can you see what every shield have in common? Skyward Sword is set to be released on November 18th in Europe, 20th in both America and Australia and 23rd of november in Japan. There will likely be more shield upgrades and there are bound to be Like Likes!
