Link’s Awakening Hacked

Over at Romhacking, Katage has released a new hack of Link’s Awakening DX. The rom features redesigned dungeons, edited difficulty, and a much more gradual progression of difficulty. This means new puzzles, more resources, and less backtracking which makes it as Katage himself states, “…balanced for those who have played the game once or twice, but the game is playable by newcomers as well, as the hack does not throw everything at the player at once.”

“New Awakening is a full hack of Link’s Awakening featuring broad revisions to all eight dungeons and minor textual edits, overworld edits, and sequence fixes to support a new dungeon order, as well as a more interesting recoloring of the Face Shrine, now the last level. The difficulty is substantially increased, with new puzzles as well as new monster encounters, but backtracking is minimal, difficult puzzles offer subtle clues, extra resources are available where needed, and the challenges do not require perfect foresight, guesswork, perfect reflexes, repetition, or save states. The game is balanced for those who have played the game once or twice, but the game is playable by newcomers as well, as the hack does not throw everything at the player at once. The difficulty begins fairly moderate and gradually increases over time. Necessary information is found in the readme. The patch is made with Lunar IPS.”

The mod features a different dungeon order as well as making Marin and Bow-Wow completely unnecessary through out the course of the game. Another major change is now the player will not be able to get the sword until they reach Turtle Rock, which is now the fourth dungeon in the game. This means the player must rely of bombs and arrows, making bomb arrows a help trick that even the hacker recommends the player uses.
