Ever felt like the Zelda franchise could use more funk? YouTube collective Flipside certainly think so, and they’ve transformed the Legend of Zelda main theme into a sterling four-minute-twenty funk-rock hybrid, complete with keytars, epic trumpet solos, and a jazzy drumbeat to back everything up.

This sextet of musicians have combined “Title” and “Overworld” from The Legend of Zelda with elements of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl versions and a dash of the overworld theme from Link’s Awakening. Even the mighty Wind Fish couldn’t sleep through a track like this, and Michael Kim’s bombastic trumpet solo at 2:25 is a particular highlight.

Flipside release content monthly and already have Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Melee covers up on their channel, so be sure to check them out. The level of technical talent on show here is off the charts, and it’s great to hear what classic video game themes sound like spruced up by such professional musicians.

Who knows, maybe we’ll see Link turn his hand to the keytar if we ever get a Zelda title set in the modern day. He is a rather talented musician after all, and early concepts for Breath of the Wild saw him wielding a telecaster guitar — though in this writer’s opinion, he is better off sticking to the ocarina.
