As I write this I am currently expecting my first son due in October! I have been thinking for the longest time what would be my son’s first video game, and especially his first Zelda game! Being born into a nerdy and gaming family means that he will grow up around games and Zelda games. I know that by the time he is old enough to pick up a controller and play that there will be hopefully a few new Zelda games and very likely a new console to play them on. So what will be the first Zelda game you introduce your child to?

My personal pick would be The Wind Waker. It holds a lot of memories for me, but I also think it’s cartoon-y style would be perfect to capture a child’s attention and make them want to adventure out into The Great Sea. The Wind Waker has a lot of things going for it too. The story is compelling, it has a lot of amazing dungeons, and I could go on and on about the music. The Wind Waker was a game that I played as a kid and though my brother and I found it hard to get through at times we did beat it. I think another great contender for first game to introduce a child to would be the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening.

The top down style and straightforward gameplay made it easy to follow. Link’s Awakening also does a great job at kind of “holding your hand” for players that are new to the series. I always felt like I knew where I needed to be going while playing.  The re-design is also super appealing too. What kid wouldn’t like bright colors and a kid wielding a sword? Both games would make for fun introductions to the Zelda series without your child getting lost in the over arcing story and all of the Zelda lore.

What was your first Zelda game, and what game would you introduce your child to first? Sound off in the comments below.
