The Zelda series is one that tends to be relatively cyclical in terms of its story development, which is an aspect of the series that has bothered some fans. By now, most Zelda fans have noticed the pattern that seems to be embedded within a Zelda story’s foundation—Link wakes up, meets Princess Zelda, goes on quest to prove himself worthy as a hero, gets Master Sword, inherits Triforce of Courage, and destroys Ganon/Ganondorf, which returns peace to Hyrule. Instead of looking at this formula as cliché, Dr.Wily has a theory that explains why this formula has to exist in Hyrule’s lore.

Hyrule, Dr.Wily notes, is created by three goddesses, as summarized in Ocarina of Time, but it is never stated why the land is made. As he questions why Hyrule was created in the first place, Dr.Wily begins to find parallels between the goddesses and the three main Zelda characters, Ganondorf, Link, and Zelda. He realizes that the three goddesses, Din, Nayru, and Farore, all have a characteristic and element attributed to them, and that Ganondorf, Zelda and Link share these attributes.

For example, Din is associated with power, fire, and earth, and Ganondorf, in particular, his predecessor, Demise, shows feats of power, and appears to be made up of earth and fire. Dr.Wily follows up this character examination with both Link and Zelda, and then comes to the conclusion that perhaps the goddesses weren’t entirely benevolent when they created Hyrule and left behind the Triforce. He theorizes that the goddesses were actually fighting among themselves and crafted Hyrule and three champions to fight for them, since it is likely that a fight among the goddesses themselves could have erased existence.
