Daily Debate: Which Is Your Favorite Non-Hyrule Overworld in the Zelda Series?
Posted on May 21 2022 by Mike Midwood
While the kingdom of Hyrule is certainly the Zelda series’ most iconic setting, a handful of games have whisked Link away to other, stranger lands. These titles always have a unique air to them, as though they take place on the margins of the franchise. That may be because this practice is more common in the less-popular 2D entries, but I’ve always had an appreciation for the Zelda games that take players to these far off regions. Hyrule will still be there while I’m off adventuring elsewhere, right? Something like an apocalyptic flood seems unlikely. What is your favorite overworld to explore while Hyrule is temporarily at peace?
While I love the mysteries of Koholint Island in Link’s Awakening and the atmosphere of Majora’s Mask‘s Termina, my favorite alternative Zelda landscape to traverse has to be Labrynna from Oracle of Ages. At first, Labrynna seems to be like many other Zelda overworlds. It presents linearly at first before expanding into a vast, interconnected world. What truly separates Labrynna is how well-implemented the time travel mechanics are in Oracle of Ages. Movement between time periods is more intuitive than anywhere else in the franchise and the difference between those periods is much more thoughtful. It is especially well-developed while interacting with the denizens of areas like Crescent Island and Rolling Ridge. Throw in the towns like Lynna City and Symmetry City, and you have an excellent overworld to untangle.
What about you? What is your favorite overworld besides Hyrule? Do you like when the Zelda series leaves Hyrule behind? Let us know in the comments below!
