It’s time for a death battle! The two most iconic moons in the Zelda franchise are going head to head. In the left corner we have the bringer of Malice, the reviver of minions, Breath of the Wild‘s Blood Moon! In the right corner, this satellite has had enough of a long distance relationship and has decided to get right in your face, it’s the Majora’s Mask Moon! Both have powerful villains providing their power. Both pose a great threat to the common people. Let’s stack up our two moons and see which one is the bigger threat!

The Blood Moon

The Blood Moon forms as a result of Malice, the concentration of Calamity Ganon’s energy that occurs on nights where his power is at its highest. Malice is able to escape Zelda’s control in Hyrule Castle and resurrect Ganon’s fallen minions. The Blood Moon allows Bokoblins, Moblins, and Guardians to roam Hyrule again after death. Its power also affects non-minions, as some NPCs in the game will act rather strangely on the night of a Blood Moon, becoming ravenous and on edge. There are its limitations however, as it does not revive the Scourges in Divine Beasts or other major bosses like Master Kohga.

Majora’s Moon

Majora’s Moon, charged by the spirit of Majora itself, threatens to crash down into Termina. If Link allows the final hour to finish without completing the right sequence in Majora’s Mask, we actually get to see this event! When the Moon reaches the surface it crushes the city of Clock Town and sends out a shockwave of flaming destruction that annihilates Termina completely. Inside of the Moon dwells the full power of Majora itself, as well as the rival Fierce Deity spirit. However, the damage caused by the Moon is minimal if stopped in its descent.

And the winner is…

While the Blood Moon can really only revive enemies, Majora’s Moon threatens total destruction of life. Where will the enemies respawn if the world is destroyed? The might of Majora’s Moon makes Calamity Ganon’s minions comparatively a mere nuisance. That is why, in my humble opinion, Majora’s Moon is our winner!
