In Breath of the Wild, the flower known as the Silent Princess has great significance for the character of Zelda. It is her favorite flower, but she failed to grow them domestically and hoped they might be strong enough to prosper on their own. The flower represents her own struggle against the growing weight of responsibility and tries to awaken her powers by force. Eventually, Zelda’s powers do manifest and she is able to seal herself and Calamity Ganon away in Hyrule Castle. Once Link is able to defeat Calamity Ganon for good, we see the Silent Princess has not only survived but thrived in the wild. In turn, Zelda is self-assured and has grown in confidence. Personally, I felt the flower added to Zelda’s story and is very symbolic, but I felt bad for Link and Ganondorf. So for our Daily Debate today, I ask: Should Link and Ganondorf have a symbolic flower of their own?

Throughout history, many species of flowers have been given meaning. As a Brit, I can make reference to the War of the Roses for example.  The Victorians were famous for communicating their intentions via the color and species of flower. So, what type of flower might be suitable for our two leading gentlemen?

For Link, we could have the gladiolus, which comes from the iris family.  “Gladiolus” is the diminutive for the Latin word, Gladius, which means “sword”. Their sword-shaped leaves and the meaning of their botanical name has led to their common name: sword lilies. Considering Link uses the Master Sword, I thought this tied in quite well.

What about Zelda’s favorite antagonist? Ganondorf has a bad habit of deceiving others and apparently this is symbolic of a snapdragon. The yellow puffball tansy might come in a close second, as they have been known to suggest “I declare war on you”. Something Ganondorf also likes to do and then some!

So, do you think Link and Ganondorf should have a flower of their own? What flowers do you think would suit them? Or should Zelda be the only character with a significant flower? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
