Super Mario Maker has been making quite a splash with its amiibo features, the most exciting of which adds your favorite Nintendo characters to the game as playable sprites. The Zelda franchise is obviously represented, with Hyrule’s bravest hero featured prominently in this Mario game’s trailers. In fact, a recent trailer showing off Super Mario Maker‘s amiibo support gives Zelda fans better look at how Link will be used in the game.

As with many other amiibo figures, tapping the Link amiibo to your Wii U will add the green-clad hero to Super Mario Maker in the form of a “mystery mushroom.” Collecting this item in-game will change Mario’s sprite to look like Link instead. From there, you’ll find the Link sprite can raise a Triforce piece when up is pressed on the D-Pad. Finishing a stage with this sprite will even result in a special ending tune.

This Link sprite (as with others unlocked through amiibo) essentially functions like a normal mushroom in Super Mario Bros., granting the player an extra hit of damage. If the player takes damage, the sprite will change back to Mario. It should also be noted that these special amiibo sprites are only present in the 8-bit sections of Super Mario Maker. Sorry, there are no 16-bit or New Super Mario versions of Link in the game.

Will you be playing as Link in Super Mario Maker? Who else do you want to see in the game? Let us know in the comments!
