Daily Debate: Should Hyrule Warriors Have More Original Protagonists?

There’s been a lot of news for
Hyrule Warriors this week, especially with the reveal of three new playable characters. Along with the news of Sheik, Darunia, and Ruto’s representing Ocarina of Time, we’ve gotten plenty of new details on some of the old characters too, be that from screenshots, videos, and streams. With all this discussion of characters, one topic has popped into my head lately: thus far, we have ten playable characters revealed…of whom, only Lana is original.
While I’m all for more and more references to the games we love, I can’t help but wonder if Koei Tecmo should flex their creative muscles more and give us even more original characters for this game. Sure, we’ve got a trio of fascinating villains coming our way with
Cia, Valga, and Wizzro (and, as seems to be standard for Dynasty Warriors, those three could very well become playable too), and of course I would be all over them announcing more characters lifted straight from the Zelda series. I can’t even describe how amazing it would be to learn of the inclusion of Saria, Nabooru, Groose, or members of Twilight Princess‘s Resistance—and that’s without dipping further into the likes of completely unexpected choices like Agitha was.
Even so, I can’t help but feel that it would be a missed opportunity to have Lana as the only original character on the protagonists’ side of the plot. Currently, she is the playable character I am most looking forward to using; the mystery that surrounds her—her relationship with Cia, her reason for fighting, even just simple backstory elements like where she learned her magic from—has me utterly fascinated. While we can guess elements about Sheik’s appearance and recognize hints of why, say, Ruto and Fi are joining this war, Lana is a complete enigma because we don’t have any outside knowledge to draw from. And I for one would love to be able to say that about more characters from this game.
