We’ve reported that Best Buy has already been undergoing the process of cancelling Majora’s Mask New 3DS pre-orders of those who reserved more than one unit. However, some unfortunate customers have since received emails that their pre-orders have been cancelled, even if they only pre-ordered one Majora’s Mask New 3DS. Best Buy has cited popularity exceeding the physical quantity of units available to the retailer as the reason for these cancellations. In addition, the retailer is offering $50 USD in store credit as compensation for cancelled pre-orders.

Best Buy customers who found their New 3DS pre-order cancelled received this email:

“We’re sorry but there is an issue with your pre-order. The popularity of Nintendo 3DS XL Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Limited Edition Gold/Black exceeded the quantities made available to Best Buy. As a result, we are unable to fulfill all of the pre-orders received. We regret that your particular order has been canceled and we know that this is disappointing. We want to make it up to you by offering a $50 discount that may be used towards the purchase of one of these alternate options, or other products on BestBuy.com/”

The decision for the initial cancellations seemed to be to combat scalpers that pre-ordered multiple units for resale. But as we can see in this situation, there were more pre-orders than Best Buy was able to fulfill. Until we hear more, we won’t know if Best Buy plans to restock the limited edition New 3DS.
