ChuChu are small living jellies that have made appearances in Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword. Similar enemies, Chu, appeared in Twilight Princess. They come in many different colors and each color has its own special features and characteristics.

Appearances

Majora's Mask

Majora's Mask is the first game to feature ChuChu. They first make their appearance relatively near the start of the game in Termina Field. There is a total of four different coloured ChuChu in Majora's Mask. All four types of ChuChu have the same general design and each contains an item which is released when the ChuChu is defeated (except blue).

ChuChu are blob-shaped in Majora's Mask and they have large bottoms but begin to narrow towards their eyes. They have a large mouth with pale lips and teeth that have gaps in between them. They also have two large, yellow eyes. They all have droopy eyelids with a number of wrinkles and lines on them. They are translucent monsters and when looking through them you can see the item which their body contains, except Blue ChuChu that do not contain an item.

ChuChu attack by hopping around and jumping into Link. However, they are easily defeated with one or two hits with the sword. The four colours of ChuChu in Majora's Mask are as follows: Blue, Green, Red and Yellow.

Green ChuChu

It's nothing to be afraid of...It
usually has something in its
stomach that's of use.

The green variation of ChuChu is one of the first you encounter. They contain Magic Jars if you manage to defeat them. They are found in Termina Field, the Great Bay Temple and the Stone Tower Temple. These are particularly useful if you are running low on magic, can be defeated with almost all of your weapons and respawn after a certain amount of time.

Yellow ChuChu

It's a Yellow Chuchu.
That's nothing to sweat about.

This yellow variation of ChuChu are particularly useful in dungeons where you use your bow a lot as they contain 10 Arrows. They appear in the Great Bay Temple and the Stone Tower Temple. They can be defeated in the same way as the other ChuChu; with your sword or virtually any other weapon in the game and will respawn after a certain amount of time.

The Wind Waker

ChuChus in The Wind Waker have a different appearance than their Majora's Mask counterparts. They are skinny lower down, but their head is wider. They are similar in appearance to a half inflated balloon.

These ChuChu share many characteristics with Buzz Blobs from past Zelda titles.

Like their previous counterparts, they come in multiple variations.

Green ChuChu

Green ChuChus are the second form you encounter in the game, and probably the most common variant of them all. They mostly inhabit forested areas such as the Forest Haven or Forbidden Woods. These guys can be pretty annoying before you get the boomerang, because they have the ability to turn into blobs, which makes them unable to be affected by your sword. But once you get the boomerang, you can use it to stun them, which makes them a piece of cake. They take 2 hits to kill with the Hero's Sword and 1 hit with the Master Sword.

They usually drop Green Chu Jelly when defeated.

Purple ChuChu

Purple ChuChu's are the last variant you find (Assuming, of course, that you've found at least one Blue ChuChu). And they are also probably the hardest. They are invulnerable to all your weapons, except the Mirror Shield. The only way to kill them is to shine light on them, turning them into stone. Then, you can either throw them, which destroys them, or just simply smash them with the Skull Hammer. They are mostly found in the Earth Temple, but are also in the Savage Labrynth.

Yellow ChuChu

Yellow ChuChu's appear as little orange electrified blobs, found in the Tower of the Gods and the Savage Labrynth. You defeat them the exact same way as blue chuchu's, only they are more common. Effective weapons include: Bombs, the Hero's Bow and the Boomerang.
They can drop either Green or Red Chu Jelly, but also drop Rupees, bombs and arrows etc.

The Minish Cap

ChuChu
Chuchus-Figurine.png Appear in various areas. Chuchus come in many colors. Each color is a little different, but ranged weapons work well against all.

Green ChuChu

Rock ChuChu

Spiny ChuChu

Phantom Hourglass

Green ChuChu

Green ChuChus are very rare. They are only encountered in the Temple of Courage. They have the ability to dodge attacks, so stun them with the boomerang before attacking.

Rock ChuChu

Rock ChuChus are Red ChuChus concealed within boulders. They can be defeated after you remove their rocky shell with Bombs, Bombchus, the Grappling Hook, or the Hammer.

Yellow ChuChu

Yellow ChuChus are very annoying to deal with. You can't attack them while they are electrified, you'll have to wait until they stop sparking. If you do run into them, or try to attack with your sword, you'll lose some health and your map will become pixelated for a few seconds. A good way to defeat them is to use your boomerang to stun them, and then go in for the kill.

Spirit Tracks

Helmet ChuChu

Yellow ChuChu

Skyward Sword

ChuChus are called "Chuchus" in Skyward Sword. They appear in four colors: green, red, blue, and yellow. They will crawl towards Link, trying to ram their body into him. When hit with a sword, they will split into two smaller Chuchus. These smaller ones are unable to harm you, but attach themselves to you, slowing your movements. If left alone, two smaller Chuchus will merge together.

Green ChuChu

The small variant of this Greenish blue ChuChus is first found in the Waterfall Cave on Skyloft. They also appear in Faron Woods and Lake Floria. These ChuChus will slowly move towards you, then gnaw on your leg when it gets close enough. One sword slash is enough to kill it.

The large variant is found in both Skyloft (at night) and the Ancient Cistern. Hit them with a vertical sword slash to separate it into two parts, then kill each part individiually.

Yellow ChuChu

Yellow ChuChus are found in Lanayru Mine, Lanayru Desert, Lanayru Mining Facility, Lanayru Sand Sea, and Sandship. This ChuChus are especially dangerous because of the electrical charge they give off in addition to attempting to absorb Link. If you strike the ChuChu while it is electrically charged Link will be shocked and loose a heart. To not take damage, Link must only attack them when they are not electrified.

Trivia

  • The ChuChu design from The Wind Waker to Spirit Tracks is thought to be derived from the design of Buzz Blob from Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons.
  • The ChuChu design from The Wind Waker to Spirit Tracks shares many appearance traits with the Pokémon, Wobbuffet.
