"An Adventure's Fate
The Fortune Tellers of Hyrule inherited the ability to foretell the future from their ancestors. Some said that the tellers themselves were specially gifted; others though that the real magic was in the crystal balls. It was true that the rare and beautiful crystal balls were handed down from generation to generation, but others who tried to see images in them saw nothing but their own reflections.
"

"Some travelers waited impatiently for the Fortune Teller to look into the future and listened intently as he told their fortunes."

A Link to the Past Nintendo Player's Guide

Fortune Tellers are reoccurring characters in The Legend of Zelda series.

A Link to the Past

"A Fortune Teller lived in a quaint cottage near one entrance to the Lost Woods. For a price, he would stare deep into a crystal ball to predict the futures of travelers who stopped in. Some people took his predictions seriously and visited him regularly, but others felt that they had wasted their time and money and vowed never to return."

In A Link to the Past, there are three Fortune Tellers scattered throughout the land, two found in the Light World, and one in the Dark World. When Link enters a Fortune Teller's Hut, he can speak to the Fortune Teller who offers to tell him his fortune for a cheap price. If Link chooses not to hear his fortune, the fortune teller tells Link that it is indeed a poor man who is not interested in his future.

If Link agrees to allow the Fortune Teller to tell his fortune, he will give Link a hint on what he needs to do. Often these lead to optional items, progressing in the main quest, or other secrets that help Link on his quest. The Fortune Teller will then take somewhere between 10 and 30 Rupees from Link. He wishes Link good health and will then restore his life to maximum.

The Fortune Teller in the Dark World does look a bit different than his Light World counterpart. He still has kept his basic form, but he appears to be much fatter.
