Link has always been a one of a kind Character in the Zelda series, notably looking different than anyone else in the kingdom. While we’ve had multiplayer Zelda games before, the 4 different Links were explained due to the magic of the Four Sword – which split Link into 4 characters. This is why there are many fan comics depicting these characters with very distinct personality traits, representing every big emotional side of Link himself. Of course, that is fans being fans and certainly isn’t present in the game, but how is it there are 3 characters that look very similar to Link himself in one game? Is the Four Sword back but weakened somehow?

Kotaku got a chance to talk the game’s director, Hiromasa Shikata, asking him that very question:

Why do three different people all look like Link?

“That’s a pretty deep question,” Shikata said, laughing.

“The king is a firm believer in this legend, in this prophecy that exists within their kingdom, of three heroes that come together to form a totem. The king understands from this legend that describes the true hero as someone with these long sideburns and this particular hair style and these long ears. So the king from amongst these people is able to find the correct ones. The people who meet his conditions are the true heroes.”

Interesting. A King obsessed with fashion is also obsessed with a prophecy involving hair styles, ears, and totems. This game just keeps getting crazier and crazier as more of the story is slowly unveiled. Are you liking the downright wacky direction the story seems to be taking? Are you ready to… “Totem up!”?
