Often times, gamers are quick to bash a game they think is not as good as another. Players of the Zelda series are no exception, as fans are never too shy to state what Zelda game they thought didn’t make the cut. I think it’s time to start focusing more on the positives, rather than the negatives. What better way to do that than discuss what makes a particular Zelda game fun to play?

For this editorial, I will be breaking down my top five reasons why A Link Between Worlds is a fun game to play. If one aspect of gameplay isn’t mentioned here that you thought was more fun for you, by all means please let me know in the comments.

Maybe you didn’t enjoy A Link Between Worlds as much as I did. Maybe reading this will make you want to go back and play it again, this time focusing on the fun that is outlined here. Let’s get started.

Number Five: The Art Style

I don’t know about you, but A Link Between Worlds‘ art style was pleasantly enjoyable for me. Its bright colors and cartoonish flair made it fun to traverse around Hyrule.

I particularly liked the fact that it was a cartoon-realistic mix, making the game light-hearted during some instances and serious during others. If you were walking through Kakariko Village listening to the cheerfully upbeat Kakariko Theme, the art style suited that situation. If you were tip-toeing through a dark dungeon, the art style suited that as well.

I know a lot of people complained about the art style, but for me, it was just right.

Number Four: It’s the Closest We’re Ever Going to Get to an A Link to the Past Remake

A Link to the Past is revered as one of the best Nintendo games of all time. Countless fans enjoyed this 2D Hyrule experience better than any other 2D Zelda game out there. I believe Nintendo made the right decision using A Link to the Past’s landscape, so that A Link Between Worlds would seem familiar and easy to play.

While it’s not a true remake, I am perfectly content with the game. It harbored familiar territory, and characters both new and old. It is the perfect balance between old and new.

Number Three: It’s a 3D Handheld Zelda Game That Uses Buttons, Not a Stylus

I don’t know about you, but I rather enjoyed Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. They were the first handheld 3D Zelda games, and I loved them. The big downside for me was you were forced to use the stylus. I like my buttons.

A Link Between Worlds is the perfect on-the-go Zelda game as far as I am concerned. You don’t have to worry about losing the stylus, because you don’t have to use it. You can just take your 3DS out and play away, with the ease of using good old A, B, X, and Y.

Number Two: The Dungeons Are Fun

I’m about to admit something no one knows about me: my least favorite aspect of the Zelda games is the dungeons. You read that right, dungeons aren’t my thing. I don’t dislike them, but I’m not thrilled about them either.

I enjoy the boss fights at the end, not the process of getting to them. I love the story content in between dungeons, and exploring the world. However, A Link Between Worlds was different. The dungeons were very fun for me, even the hard ones. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but for some reason I genuinely enjoyed them.

Number One: It Featured an All-New Villain

What I commonly hear fans asking for is a villain besides Ganon. They feel that Ganon has overstayed his welcome in the series, and they want new blood. Their wish came true in A Link Between Worlds, as a never-before-seen baddie entered the ring: Yuga. Yuga was truly a mystifying villain.

He was sort of like a more conventional form of Ghirahim. Yuga sported flamboyant clothing, much like Ghirahim; they even shared their taste in earrings. Plus, the voice actor Nintendo chose for Yuga was just perfect. I sincerely hope Yuga makes a comeback in a future Zelda title.
