Based on a quote from Eiji Aonuma, the folks at IGN’s NVC Podcast started discussing how multiplayer in

The Legend of Zelda series could be implemented in such a way that it would not detract from the game.

Eiji Aonuma: …When I was talking about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience, that’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year.

Hyrule Warriors is going to have cooperative play, but putting such a system in a core game is a whole different animal. Zelda games are so often about the player going on an adventure alone, over the course of which they grow up and become a real hero. Nobody wants that to be ruined by a dozen similarly dressed fairy boys tea-bagging dead Moblins while you’re trying to push a block on a switch.

Nintendo and Aonuma know what they are doing, so any multiplayer in the main

Zelda series is going to be far less intrusive than the above example. We have seen a few examples of unobtrusive multiplayer in the past, like the Tingle Bottles in Wind Waker HD and the Shadow Links in A Link Between Worlds. The Four Swords games had a form of competitive cooperative multiplayer, but Four Swords Adventures at least made it optional.

Personally, I would like to have a second player use the Wii U GamePad to fly around each room as a fairy independent from Link to help solve puzzles and discover secrets in

Zelda U. I might also be able to stomach online multiplayer in the form of other players appearing only in big areas like Hyrule Field, but I need to be left alone when I’m deep in a dungeon.

What do you guys think? Do you have ideas for multiplayer in a core

Zelda game or do you prefer your solitude? Let us know in the comments!
