Inside the Deku Tree is the first dungeon ventured through in Ocarina of Time.

Place in the Story

Spoiler Alert! This section describes a subject that is sensitive to plot development.

At the very beginning of Ocarina of Time, Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree[1], who was cursed by Ganondorf[2]. The Great Deku Tree wants Link to go inside him to break the curse[3]. After Link defeated the dungeon boss Queen Gohma the Great Deku Tree gives Link the Kokiri's Emerald - the spiritual stone of the Forest and he wants Link to go to Hyrule Castle[4]. Even as Link was able to break the curse, the Great Deku Tree dies soon after Link left the dungeon.[5]

Dungeon Design

The dungeon is (as it is inside a tree) mainly out of wood. The main room is a large and high "hall" with 4 floors. The lowest floor is blocked by a spider web, that can only be broken when Link jumps from the highest level onto it. In the lowest floor is some water, possibly indicating that it is a part of the Great Deku Tree's rooting.

There is a secret room in the lower floor not visible on the dungeon map. It can only be accessed using bombs.

The boss Queen Gohma is located in the lowest level in a large room, which is protected by 3 Deku Scrubs that need to be hit in the proper order.[6] Once Link reaches the boss room, he is locked inside.
