The dungeon is (as it is inside a tree) mainly out of wood. The main room is a large and high "hall" with 4 floors. The lowest floor is blocked by a spider web, that can only be broken when Link jumps from the highest level onto it. In the lowest floor is some water, possibly indicating that it is a part of the Great Deku Tree's rooting.

Inside the Deku Tree is the first dungeon ventured through in Ocarina of Time.

Place in the Story

Spoiler Alert! This section describes a subject that is sensitive to plot development.

At the very beginning of Ocarina of Time, Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree, who was cursed by Ganondorf. The Great Deku Tree wants Link to go inside him to break the curse. After Link defeated the dungeon boss Queen Gohma the Great Deku Tree gives Link the Kokiri's Emerald - the spiritual stone of the Forest and he wants Link to go to Hyrule Castle. Even as Link was able to break the curse, the Great Deku Tree dies soon after Link left the dungeon.

Dungeon Design

The dungeon is (as it is inside a tree) mainly out of wood. The main room is a large and high "hall" with 4 floors. The lowest floor is blocked by a spider web, that can only be broken when Link jumps from the highest level onto it. In the lowest floor is some water, possibly indicating that it is a part of the Great Deku Tree's rooting.

There is a secret room in the lower floor not visible on the dungeon map. It can only be accessed using bombs.

The boss Queen Gohma is located in the lowest level in a large room, which is protected by 3 Deku Scrubs that need to be hit in the proper order. Once Link reaches the boss room, he is locked inside.
