"The Wind Shrine

This holds the hopes of the Rito people."

— Tingle Tuner Description

The Wind Shrine,[1][2] also known as the Wind God's Shrine,[3] is a small isle that is found at the back of Dragon Roost Island.[4] It is the location of two monuments; these monuments honor the Gods of Wind, Zephos and Cyclos.[5] However, Cyclos' monument was broken,[6] causing him to become angry,[7] which caused the winds to become crazy and unpredictable, when they used to be nice.[8] The Rito honor the gods by always going down and visiting the shrine before taking off to the skies.[3] Link can choose to visit the Wind Shrine either before entering the Dragon Roost Cavern or after. It is not required to visit the shrine before the dungeon, but Link must go there after completion of the dungeon before he heads off to the Forest Haven.

The first time Link enters the shrine, he can walk up to the monument on the left, and take out his Wind Waker. By playing it as directed on the left monument, he learns the Wind's Requiem,[9][10] the tune that allows Link to change the direction of the wind anytime he wants, to whatever direction he wants.[11][10][12] After the cutscene of the wind changing direction is finished, Zephos, the God of Wind, appears next to Link. He introduces himself, and acknowledges Link as the new Wind Waker.[13][14] He says that for a beginner, Link has a nice wind-sense about him.[15] He further explains the use of the Wind's Requiem as a tune that can be used to gain control over the direction of the wind.[16] He tells Link of his brother, Cyclos, who was so upset that his monument was broken that he used his power to create cyclones, which he uses to torment people.[17][7][18] Before he leaves, he tells Link that his final request to him is to chastise Cyclos if he ever sees him at sea.[19][20] With that, Zephos flies off into the sky, and is never seen again.

The Wind Shrine can be visited again at any time, but it is not required to do so.
