Technically, the Paraglider is completely optional, and it is possible to beat the game without it, as Link can tank the falls on the way to Ganondorf with fairies or fall-damage cancel by latching onto a wall at the right time. Breath of the Wild

"An item that you received from the king on the Great Plateau. It allows you to sail through the sky."

Breath of the Wild in-game description

In Breath of the Wild, it is gifted upon Link from the King Rhoam after he has completed all four trials in the Great Plateau. It allows Link to exit the Great Plateau alive, and explore what remains of the Kingdom of Hyrule.

This item functions much like previous 'gliders' in the franchise, such as the Deku Leaf, or Ezlo's gliding ability in The Minish Cap. This time, Link can use the Paraglider for longer than ever before, as it only consumes stamina at a slow rate. It can be used to glide over large gaps, or to break falls, much akin to the Sailcloth.

Trivia

  • The Paraglider could not be possible in real life:
    • It doesn't actually have a surface area large enough to support an individual with the mass of Link, or King Rhoam for that matter. In reality, it should require a considerably larger sail.
    • If hit by horizontal winds, gliding with the Paraglider effectively nullifies altitude loss due to gravity, which is close to impossible in real life without vertical winds, winds with extreme velocity, or exerting resistance.
    • Link's vertical stance by hanging from the Paraglider would focus too much weight distribution on a single point, which in reality would significantly prevent him from moving in any direction but down. That is, without going into steering, which is a whole other problem on its own.
    • Its ability to break long falls would also be impossible, as Link can accomplish it from a height incredibly close to the ground regardless of the momentum built from the fall, or the height of the fall itself.
  • On its sail, it's emblazoned with a Rito symbol, suggesting that it was manufactured by them.
  • The Paraglider is the only wood/fabric made item in the game that both doesn't catch on fire at Death Mountain, and is unbreakable.
  • It's the only Key Item in the game (aside from the Sheikah Slate) that is readily available and can always be used.
  • Ironically, in-game, King Rhoam doesn't actually need the Paraglider at all, considering that he can manifest anywhere at will.
  • The Paraglider is implied to be compacted so that Link can deploy it at will, but it's not visible on his character model.

Age of Calamity

The paraglider is used by most of the characters in the game except the Rito. When the characters are selected for main story quests, the cutscenes show them jumping from the Central Tower and deploying paragliders while heading towards their destination.

While in battle, the paraglider can be deployed after performing a wall jump, by jumping from a height, or by deploying it on ground wind vents to reach great heights upon prompt. Attacking while paragliding can be done for regular and strong attacks, mostly performing mid-air or ground-pound attacks.

Tears of the Kingdom

This Tears of the Kingdom section is a stub. You can help the Zelda Dungeon Wiki by expanding it.

"This item, given to you by Purah, lets you ride the wind and glide through the sky. Press 'X' in midair to activate it."

— In-game description

The Paraglider is given to Link by Purah in Lookout Landing after he has spoken to Captain Hoz at the First Gatehouse in Hyrule Castle. It allows Link to survive the fall after being shot out of a Skyview Tower.

Technically, the Paraglider is completely optional, and it is possible to beat the game without it, as Link can tank the falls on the way to Ganondorf with fairies or fall-damage cancel by latching onto a wall at the right time. However, this necessitates some creative strategy in order to kill Colgera without using the updrafts, as well as necessitating some very accurate skydiving for the Demon Dragon (fall damage is disabled in the Demon Dragon fight).

Alternate fabrics can be found or earned in the world, or obtained using an amiibo. Sayge in the Kochi Dye Shop will rework the paraglider to use one of these alternate fabric for 20 rupees. Changing it at least once is required to begin the Photographing a Chuchu side quest, although it can be changed back at any time thereafter.
