Hoz is a character from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

Hoz is a guard that can be found at the East Akkala Stable. He can be seen walking back and forth near the front of the stable, wielding a Soldier's Spear. He has been put on patrol duty lately as it has gotten a bit dangerous in the area, making some of the residents of the stable uncomfortable.[1] There have been rumors about a suspicious man named Kilton, who runs the Fang and Bone shop and only comes out at nighttime.[2]

A Shady Customer

After talking to Hoz at the Stable, he will ask Link if he's seen Kilton. This will begin the side quest, A Shady Customer. Hoz asks Link to please tell him all the juicy details if he does encounter Kilton.[3] After talking to him again, he mentions that he can't leave the stable as he is on guard duty, but asks Link to get a close-up picture of him.[4]

Kilton can originally be found at the Skull Lake, located at the northwest end of Akkala. However, Kilton will only appear after 9pm each evening. Furthermore, he won't just appear. Link will need to approach the area after it is already 9pm to encounter Kilton. After meeting him at Skull Lake, Kilton will then appear on the outskirts of all the various towns in Hyrule. Once Link finds him, he can take a picture with his Camera.

Return to Hoz and he's delighted that you have a picture of Kilton.[5][6] As a thanks for helping find him, Hoz will give Link a Silver Rupee, completing the quest.[7] Hoz will return to his mission, but he still wonders about Kilton. Kilton gives him the creeps as he wonders what kind of things he sells at the Fang and Bone shop.[8][9]

Tears of the Kingdom

In Tears of the Kingdom, Hoz has been promoted to Captain Hoz. He is the head of the search party, tasked by Purah to help investigate Hyrule Castle to search for Princess Zelda. He has firm control over the members of the search party, who take direct orders from him.

Hoz can be found on top of the First Gatehouse, standing alongside Toren. When Link arrives, Hoz is very pleased to see him all in one piece. He thinks that because Link has returned, this means that Princess Zelda must be safe as well.[10] He's still concerned Zelda is missing, but is very relieved that Link is fine and came to help with the search.[11]

While Link is speaking with Hoz, Toren will see Princess Zelda in the distance.[12][13] Who after appearing for a brief moment in the distance, she begins to float into the air and turns into light, before flying away. After witnessing this, Hoz encourages Link to inform Purah and suggests that he will back off the search party for the time being.[14][15]

Later quests

Hoz later leads Hoz's Squad in the Monster-Control Crew, attacking monster strongholds in Hyrule Field and Necluda (Fort Hateno).

Hoz can be seen along the pathway at the Windvane Meadow, found just southwest of the Hyrule Castle Chasm. Speaking to him here will begin the Bring Peace to Hyrule Field! quest. They are approaching the monster stronghold ahead and he does ask if Link could assist them. Nothing would be more encouraging to the rest of the group than to have Hyrule's best swordsman by their side.[16][17]

If Link speaks to any of the members of Hoz's Squad during the leadup to the battle, Hoz will interrupt, telling Link that this is not a good time to be distracting people from their objective.[18] Hoz will ride up to the enemy camp, beginning the battle with the Marauders of Hyrule Field. After they have been defeated, Hoz will shout out in victory.[19] Hoz will thank Link for his help, rewarding him with a Silver Rupee. He also mentions that he was told that Link wields a special sword.[20] Although if Link does not have the Master Sword, Hoz comments about how ordinary Link's weapon is, stating that it isn't much different than the ones his squad is using.[21]

Afterwards, Hoz mentions that the squad is planning to head south, to Fort Hateno. This will complete the Bring Peace to Hyrule Field! quest, but will then open the Bring Peace to Necluda! quest.[22] The group can be found along the path, just west of Fort Hateno. When Link approaches, he can speak with Hoz, who hopes that Link assists them once again.[23] After defeating the monsters, Hoz will thank Link and reward him with a Silver Rupee.[24][25] Despite winning the battle here, Hoz mentions that the Blood Moon will rise, and that monsters will flood the land once again. His squad will rest up and be ready for battle when they return.[26]

Trivia

  • Hoz is one of only three Hylian Soldiers in Breath of the Wild, alongside Nell and Savelle. In Tears of the Kingdom, he's the only one from this trio to remain as a Soldier, with the other two joining the Zonai Survey Team.

I don't mean to be rude, but...your weapon doesn't seem all that different from ours. The one I heard about reveals its true power when wielded by someone worthy. Could...that be it? Ah well, I'll be the first to admit when there's a gap in my knowledge. Ah, I'm so sorry. I nearly forgot something very important..." — Hoz, Tears of the Kingdom
