"A bomb that can be detonated remotely. The force of the blast can be used to damage monsters or destroy objects. There are both round and cube bombs, so use whichever best fits the situation."

The Remote Bomb is a Rune ability for the Sheikah Slate found in Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity. It allows bombs to be created and exploded on command.

Location and uses

The Remote Bomb Rune is unlocked using the Guidance Stone in the Ja Baij Shrine. When using it, Link will create a blue Bomb that he can carry and place. There are two types of Remote Bombs: spheres and cubes. The former will roll down slopes and can be moved by external forces, such as wind, while the latter are resistant to movement, enabling Link to choose which one he most needs. Pressing X while carrying a Remote Bomb causes Link to dismiss the Bomb without triggering the Rune's cooldown. Link can also drop Remote Bombs while using the Paraglider.

Remote Bombs can be detonated at any time using L. Upon detonating, they will deal 12 damage to anything caught in the blast radius and destroy obstacles such as Trees, Ore Deposits, or fragile rock. Link himself can be damaged by the explosion, but will be safe if something solid is between him and the blast. Bombs can be used as a means of combat when Link has no weapons or as a support attack, but more intelligent enemies will either kick the Bombs away or throw them at Link. Once used, the Remote Bomb goes on cooldown for 6 seconds; However, both types of Bombs have separate cooldowns.

Link can upgrade this Rune to Remote Bomb+ at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, for the cost of three Ancient Shafts. The upgraded Bombs deal 24 damage, and their cooldown is reduced to 3 seconds. Besides this restriction, there is no limit to how many Bombs can be created or held at once, and it is possible to create both a single cube-shaped and spherical bomb to be placed in tandem with one another, with the timer being tied to the shape of the bomb, allowing for near-simultaneous detonation.

Other appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Link uses the Remote Bomb Rune as his down special. While it can be used for attack as tradition, Link can use the Remote Bomb to either combo off of strategic dropping of the Remote Bomb or use it as a way to blast himself back to stage. As he still takes damage from the bomb, Link can have it be used against him, either by simply being unluckily/unskillfully blasting himself towards the blast zone, or an opponent taking advantage of the Remote Bomb and damaging it back into Link's face for a KO.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

In Age of Calamity, Remote Bombs are unlocked alongside Cryonis after clearing The Battle of Hyrule Field, and can be used by any warrior. When used, the warrior will perform a unique offensive technique using Remote Bombs. Regardless of how the warrior uses them, Remote Bombs will damage enemy Weak Point Gauges even when they aren't exposed. Once used, the player's Runes go on cooldown for a short time.

Remote Bombs can also be used to counter enemies who are either charging a powerful attack or attempting a turtling tactic. When the enemy does so, a large Remote Bomb icon will appear in front of them as a counter prompt: If they are hit with a Remote Bomb quickly enough, their guard will break, dealing damage, exposing their Weak Point Gauge, and stunning the enemy.

Trivia

  • A common speedrunning glitch used in Breath of the Wild is the Bomb-Impact Launch (BIL), or simply the Wind-Bomb. It is performed by forcing a Bomb to be launched into Link's back, and will catapult him forwards at extreme speeds when performed correctly. This technique is used liberally to quickly traverse Hyrule.
