The Ocarina is a recurring instrument in The Legend of Zelda series. It first appeared in A Link to the Past, when it was used to teleport Link to certain places in the Light World. It has now appeared in six different games. There are six different ocarinas, the most well-known being the Ocarina of Time.

A Link to the Past
Flute
The flute in A Link to the Past was used to teleport to set locations, but only when in the Light World. When played, a bird would swoop in and carry you away. You could then choose where you wish to jump to. While it was called a Flute in all the English versions, it was called an Ocarina in the Japanese game, and that is the reason it is on this page.
The flute in A Link to the Past is used to teleport to set locations, but only while in the Light World. When played, a Duck would swoop in and carry Link away. He could then choose where he wished to jump to. While it is called a Flute in all the English versions, the sprite depicts an ocarina, and it is called an Ocarina in the Japanese game.

To get it, go to the Haunted Grove in the Dark World. Speak to the creature sitting on the tree stump. He will tell you that he used to play his flute for all the animals there. Then he will give you a shovel and tell you to dig up his flute from near some flowers. Go back to the Light World and dig around in the top-left area of the Grove. You should find the Flute. Go back to the Grove in the Dark World and talk to the boy. He will say he can no longer play the flute in his form, so you can have it. Then he will transform into a tree.

In Link's Awakening, the Ocarina is received at Dream Shrine and can be used to play three different songs: Manbo's Mambo, Frog's Song of Soul, and Ballad of the Wind Fish. Marin asks Link to play the Ballad of the Wind Fish to accompany her singing.LA She also comments that his playing is "not very good" if he plays it while they are traveling to the Walrus together.LA After gathering the Eight Instruments of the Sirens, Link plays along on the Ocarina outside of the Wind Fish's Egg on Mt. Tamaranch to open a passage.LA

Head back to Kakariko Village in the Light World. Go into one of the first houses on the left and play the flute in front of the old man. He will wake up and ask if you met his son, implying that he is the Flute Boy's father. He will talk to you a bit. Then go outside to the statue of a bird. Play the Flute while standing on the S and facing the bird. The bird will come to life and fly off. Now, all you have to do is play the Flute in the Light World to fly to one of 8 different locations. Voila!
Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time
Fairy Ocarina
There are two ocarinas in Ocarina of Time. The first one Link receives is the Fairy Ocarina, which his friend Saria gives him just as he is leaving the Kokiri Forest. This is only used for the first part of the game, until he gets the second ocarina, the Ocarina of Time. Link receives this ocarina from Princess Zelda herself.

Majora's Mask
In Link's Awakening, the ocarina is received at Dream Shrine and can be used to play three different songs: Manbo's Mambo, Frog's Song of Soul, and Ballad of the Wind Fish.
Ocarina of Time
The ocarina in Majora's Mask is the same as the one in its predecessor: the Ocarina of Time. It is stolen from Link shortly after the start of the game by the Skull Kid. Link must retrieve it from him by the end of the first three days. Then he remembers the Song of Time, and he must play it to return to the Dawn of the First Day. This cycle is repeated endlessly throughout the game.

Ocarina of Time
The Minish Cap
Ocarina of Wind
In The Minish Cap, the Ocarina Link gets is a brand new one, not used in any other game. It is called the Ocarina of Wind. It is used in a similar fashion to the Flute in A Link to the Past by calling a bird named Zeffa. However, before Link can fly to a location, he must first have examined a Wind Crest, which will cause it to blow up and reveal a symbol. There are eight Wind Crests in The Minish Cap.

There are two ocarinas in Ocarina of Time. The first one you get is the Fairy Ocarina, which you receive from Saria just as you are leaving the Kokiri Forest. This is only used for the first part of the game, until you get the second ocarina: the Ocarina of Time, which the game is named after. You receive this ocarina from Princess Zelda herself. After you have received the three spiritual stones: the Kokiri's Emerald, the Goron's Ruby, and the Zora's Sapphire, you will head back to Hyrule Castle Town, only to find the drawbridge is up. Then a cutscene will show the drawbridge dropping, and the princess riding out on a horse with Impa. Zelda will throw the Ocarina of Time into the moat. Then you will meet Ganon face to face for the first time. After the cutscene is over, swim into the river and dive down to collect the Ocarina. A vision will occur and Zelda will teach you a song, which will be discussed later.
Link obtains the Ocarina of Wind after he completes the Fortress of Winds. It is required to get to the fourth dungeon of the game, the Temple of Droplets.

In BS The Legend of Zelda, the Ocarina is found in Level 4 of MAP1 and Level 4 of MAP2. It functions near-identically to the Recorder of the original The Legend of Zelda; used to defeat Digdogger, open Level 6 of MAP1 and Level 6 of MAP2 on beaches in the south-eastern corner of Hyrule (in Week 3 of both versions), and warp between opened dungeons.

The ocarina in Majora's Mask is the same as the one in OOT: the Ocarina of Time. It is stolen from you shortly after the start of the game by the skull kid. You must retrieve it from him by the end of the first three days. Then you will remember the Song of Time, and you must play it to return to the Dawn of the First Day. This cycle is repeated endlessly throughout the game; playing through 3 days, before playing the Song of Time and returning to the Dawn of the First Day.
