Story
Much is still unknown about the story in Breath of the Wild, but the basic outline was given by game creators at the E3 2016 demo. The game begins when Link is woken up by an old man and learns he was asleep for 100 years, in the Shrine of Resurrection, where he is given a device known as a Sheikah Slate. He finds the world outside to be in a state of unrest by the actions of a monster, known as Calamity Ganon, who has taken over Hyrule Castle, and whose presence has caused significant damage to the realm. It's then up to Link to stop the monster and save Hyrule once more.

A bit of text from gameplay footage shows the Old Man character talking about the Sheikah's role in the story. He tells Link this:
Prelude
“The appearance of those towers and the awakening of this shrine… It’s all connected to that Sheikah Slate you carry on your hip there. Long ago, an advanced civilization known as the Sheikah inhabited these lands. It has been quite some time since I’ve seen or heard of the Sheikah Slate… It was the power and wisdom of the Sheikah that saved this land time and time again. But their civilization disappeared long ago… or so it is said. It is interesting, however, to think… that something of them might still remain hidden away in a shrine such as this,
Ten thousand years ago, an ancient race known as the Sheikah created the Guardians and the Divine Beasts to watch over and protect Hyrule. These constructs would assist in defending Hyrule against the inevitable return of Ganon, who sought to destroy the land and the Hylian people. Over time Ganon became nothing more than a legend, until one day when a prophecy was made foretelling the imminent return of evil beast.

With this in mind, King Rhoam and the Hylian people uncovered the ancient relics and learned to control them in preparation for Ganon's return. In addition, Princess Zelda commanded Link, her knight and the chosen Hero of Hyrule, along with four individuals known as the Champions to pilot each of the Divine Beasts. Each champion was selected to represent the unique races Hyrule was composed of. They included Mipha of the Zora, Daruk of the Gorons, Urbosa of the Gerudo, and Revali of the Rito.

However, before Zelda could unlock her true power as the reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia, Calamity Ganon returned. He took control of the Guardians and the Divine Beasts, killed the four Champions, and left much of Hyrule in ruins. Soon after, Princess Zelda finally unlocked the power that was inside her. Events took another turn for the worse, though, as Link died trying to protect her. Link was taken to the Shrine of Resurrection, where after a deep sleep he would recover and be ready to fight Ganon once again. Princess Zelda returned the sacred Master Sword to its resting spot in the Korok Forest, and used her power to seal Ganon inside Hyrule Castle until Link awakened.

Present
A century later Link awoke to a mysterious voice from his slumber in the Shrine of Resurrection, not knowing who he is or where he is. After walking out onto the Great Plateau, he meets an Old Man, who is revealed to be the spirit of King Rhoam. The King informs Link that Princess Zelda is gradually losing her power to contain Ganon, who will soon break free of his prison. To obtain the power to defeat Ganon, Link must regain his lost memories and unlock the power he once possessed.

With the King's help and guided by Zelda's voice, Link travels to the four regions the Champions hailed from. One by one, he took back control of the Divine Beasts from Ganon and freed the spirits of the Champions. He then proceeded to Hyrule Castle and defeated Calamity Ganon, freeing Princess Zelda, rescuing Hyrule, and fulfilling their destiny as Hyrule's protectors. Afterwards, the two set out to rebuild Hyrule to its former glory.
