Sokra’s character as a wandering prophet and musician may have been inspired by biwa hōshi, or “lute priests.” Prior to the Meiji period of medieval Japan, these traditionally male musicians traveled from town to town, playing their biwa lutes and reciting songs, stories (typically war stories), poetry, and prayers. Biwa hōshi were typically blind, and wore the long robes of Buddhist monks. They also kept their heads shaved, which was also common practice among Buddhist monks. | |||
