With a total of 18 Memories, reference to the locations of the Breath of the Wild Interactive Map, there are three types of memories you can recover, a location based memory that is related to the main quest "Captured Memories", of which you will see a yellow shiny glow that you will interact with, the second is Divine Beast Champions Memories, which it will be revealed if went through the main quests for the Divine Beasts (some can be missed if you only rely on a quick guide), the 3rd is the Master Sword Memory, unlocked after obtaining the Master Sword.
Link must first visit Hateno Village in order to repair the Camera function of the Sheikah Slate. This restores 12 pictures which were taken on the slate; each containing a location of a memory to be found. These images show locations from all over Hyrule, and if Link visits these locations, he will have a flashback of a moment in time; a memory. Along with the 12 picture memories, six additional memories can be found at certain points in the game. These include memories Link has of the four Champions, the Master Sword, and of his defeat in battle.
