Zelda Dungeoning (rules and sign-ups)

Welcome to the experimental Zelda Dungeoning game!
This game is designed to take control of a hero on a quest. Following the actions of the heroes of old, you embark on a journey to quench the evils that have once again swarmed the land. You meet up with many who share your ideas along the way, and though the friends may come and go, the adventures shall be told forever.

As you may have guessed, this game is based off of the Zelda universe. However, this game transcends time and space. Meaning between any adventures, you can and might have items and equipment from anywhere in the "timeline", meaning that not only can one use the Grappling Hook from Wind Waker, but at the same time we can employ the Spinner from Twilight Princess. Along the same lines, our adventures may take us across Hyrule, the X Eye Reef islands, Termina, Koholint, "New Hyrule", or anywhere else in our quest to vanquish evil.

The dungeons can be found HERE. Please only enter the dungeon if your character is up to date before the dungeon has been started.

Basic Rules:
The style of this game is based off of D&D style games. But much simplified. If you've never given it a try, it's basically a text/word based adventure. You design your character; their race, background, alignment.

First off, you need to create your character (see next section). You can visit the shop (below) between dungeons to stock up on ammunition or buy new equipment. When everyone is ready we'll venture into a dungeon. Here, you're presented with a scene of what you have before you. You can go about exploring or looting the place up, but the main goal is to defeat the great evil residing in the dungeon to release the area from it's evil grasp. There are two phases:

Main Phase: This is what most of the playing will be in. There will be some puzzles and such to solve (though nothing very complicated since there is no graphics and object manipulation). You can explore the room, search for things, loot items, and basically do anything you think you want to do. If you find a table, you can try to hide under it, climb on top of it, or try to break it. If you see a spooky corridor you can run down it, tiptoe down cautiously, or try to convince everyone else to go together as one big group. There is no turn order, and basically whoever is on and active will get take the benefits and dangers of doing anything they choose to do. Inactivity from players means they gain nothing during these times.

Battle Phase: When a creature is encountered, we enter battle phase. Each player is given initiative points dependent upon the number of players we have at any time. You may take any number of actions up to and equal to your current number of initiative points. As before, an action can be anything your character would do in that situation. Each creature will randomly be given a placement to take its actions, and then will take it's actions after a number of initiative points have been spent equal to the number of players. In the event of inactivity from players in a long battle, active members will be given extra intiative points so as to keep the battle progressing.

When a dungeon is cleared, experience and levels are given out, and all players exit the dungeon, given the chance to visit the shop to stock up, sell, or invest. New players can join anytime between dungeons. They will be given free levels to not be battling a level 10 dungeon at level 1, but with the drawback of not having the equipment from previous explorations.
Character Creation:
What you need to start a character is: Race (see spoiler), Alignment (Good, Neutral, Bad), and L1 Stats (total 45). Everything else is optional but helps to better involve your creature.

There are four races you can choose from:
The "all-around" hero:
Hylian - Well balanced. Base stats 5 ATK, 5 DEF, 5 SPC
Starts with 25 HP and 10 MP.

The "unstoppable" tank:
Goron - Heavy Defence. Base stats 5 ATK, 10 DEF, 0 SPC
Starts with 40 HP.

The "graceful" fighter:
Zora - Heavy Attack. Base stats 10 ATK, 2 DEF, 3 SPC
Starts at 20 HP and 6 MP. Zora's have a base +1 attack bonus.

The "mysterious" spellcaster:
Sheika - Heavy Special. Base stats 2 ATK, 3 DEF, 10 SPC
Starts at 10 HP and 20 MP.

NOTE: Gorons are the only race than can have 0 in any stat. A choice of 0 SPC is permanent (you can never gain SPC after creation). This can change their inventory (see below), and SPC attack and defense (see stats).
All races have a base stat total of 15 points. You are given 30 bonus points to spend on your stats. Your character will have a stat point total of 45. A well balanced character will have a total of 15 on each, whereas an completely ATK focused Zora will have 40 ATK, 2 DEF, and 3 SPC. In addition, every level a character earns, he/she is given one extra point to spend (after HP/MP bonuses are applied).

In addition to their race and stats (necessary), you need to decide their alignment (are they good, neutral, or evil?), their alignment determines what options and items become available to them at certain stages in the game, as well as possibly affecting your relationships with other characters. Finally, there is always possible moderation. If your character is good but you try to do something evil to gain a particularly powerful item, for example, that decision can be veto'd by the game mod for something your character would actually do.

When creating your character, you can type up a background for and/or design your character, and PM it to the game mod. A background must be at least 1 full page of text and a design must be a fully detailed drawing/graphic/etc. of what you imagine your character looks like. Qualifying entries will be awarded one bonus item based on your submission (example: If your background/design shows a bow is very important to your character, you may be given a bow). Specific item is at the discretion of the game mod and will only be awarded between dungeons. Non-qualifying entries will not be awarded anything.

All starting characters are given 100 Rupees, a Short Sword, a Wood Sheild, basic Boots, and basic Clothes.
Players have inventory room for 5 equipment: Two hands, feet, clothes/armor, and rings (you can only wear one ring at a time, regardless of how many fingers your character has).
Players have inventory room for 5 extra items (any item that's not equipped) and 5 spells as well. (As Gorons are so large, if you choose to be a Goron without any SPC, these convert to extra item slots.) Quantity items (such as bullets or arrows or bombs) will stack with the items they're used with (if applicable) and have no limit to the number you can carry, but the base item takes up a slot, even when at 0.
Stats:
Stats In Battle:
Your Attack Bonus = (ATK - 5)/2. 1 or lower = 1.
In addition to the direct bonus, items, skills, or other factors can effect this.

Your Defense Bonus = (DEF - 3)/2. 1 or lower = 1.
In addition to the direct bonus, items, skills, or other factors can effect this.

Your Special Attack Bonus and Special Defense Bonus are calculated the same way as Attack Bonus and Defense Bonus, respectively, except using the SPC stat. Meaning a high SPC will help both your SPC attacks as well as your SPC defence, but there are less SPC opportunities, so overall they'll be of equal usefulness. In the case of a Goron with 0 SPC, the formulas for this are changed to be divided by four: (ATK - 5)/4 for Special Attack, and (DEF - 3)/4 for Special Defense.

In order for an attack to connect, your Attack Bonus + a random D20 roll must be greater than the matching defense bonus + a random D20 roll. If your number is lower, the attack is considered missed/dodged/blocked, etc. If the number is higher, you damage is dealt (also semi-randomly) based on the weapon you are using and any applicable bonuses. In most cases, all that must be done is stating the actions attempted, and the game mod will handle all of the calculations behind the scenes.
Stats Outside of Battle:
Stats are used for practically everything your character does that it isn't assumed you can automatically accomplish. Walking, running, talking, swimming, climbing; things that are essential to exploring and adventuring are considered automatic, so long as you don't have an item/equipment that would prevent this.

ATK is used for anything you'll need strength, aim, speed, or more for. Anything that can be related to an essential skill in attacking and the action you're doing. Whether it be lifting something heavy, pushing a boulder, or chucking stones onto targeted areas. Attack is the most actively-used skill.

DEF is used for anything you'll need toughness, health, or more. Anything related to an essential skill used in combat defense and the action you're attempting. This will most commonly be a reaction to a trap. DEF is also used if you take damage outside of battle.

SPC is used for everything magic related. Anything magical outside of battle, or related to an essential skill in the magic arts and the action you take. This is used mostly when interacting/studying magical items and artifacts you come across, and also magical traps.

Additionally, special events or actions can require multiple stats. An example of this would be throwing rocks into a force field to try to break it. The aiming of the throw will depend on ATK and the knowledge of a force field as to where to throw will depend upon SPC. It's up to the player to decide if their stats are high enough, as failure will most likely have negative consequences.
Stats While Leveling Up:
The amount of HP you earn per level:
(ATK + DEF)/5

The ammount of MP you earn per level:
SPC/5

Each character is given 1 bonus point to spend on their stats after HP and MP bonuses are applied.
Character Example:
Your character is a L1 Hylian.
You have 20 ATK, 15 DEF, 10 SPC
Your Attack Bonus is 7. (20-5)/2 = 15/2 = 7.5 (rounded down) = 7
Your Defense Bonus is 5. (15-3)/2 = 12/2 = 6
Your Special Attack Bonus is 2. (10-5)/2 = 5/2 = 2.5 (rounded down) = 2
Your Special Defense Bonus is 3. (10-3)/2 = 7/2 = 3.5 (rounded down) = 3
(If your character is well balanced, 15 all, each attack bonus will be 5 and each defense bonus will be 6.)

You level up to L2:
You gain 7 bonus HP (20+15)/5 = 35/5 = 7
You gain 2 bonus MP 10/5 = 2
(If your character is well balanced, 15 all, you'll gain 6 HP and 3 MP.)
Only after HP and MP additions are added do you spend your bonus Stat Point.
NOTE: All formulas and percentages, unless specifically stated otherwise, are rounded down to the nearest whole number; minimum of 1.
NOTE: All instances of "L" in a formula is representing the selected character's level. So given "+L" and the character is level 3, add three.
Exploring the Dungeon:
When exploring dungeons, you can do pretty much anything and everything you want. The main exploring methods will be a cause and effect type posts. This means that you say everything that your character does, or tries to do, but you don't say things such as if you succeed or fail at doing something or the results of those actions. Outside of battle there is no turn order, but you can only do up to as much as the current game state allows. To simplify that, lets say that you want to open cross the room and open the door. You can say that you do just that, but if there was a trap somewhere that you crossed over, you'll have been stopped at that and wouldn't have made it to the door. If it was clear, then you'll make it to the door and open it (assuming you can).

When you do anything, any nearby character will have seen what it is you've done. If you do something in a room full of people, they will all know what you've done. So if you do something evil in front of a bunch of good players, for example, then they all may start to dislike you. On the contrary, any actions or information that is limited to certain characters, meaning other characters don't know what's going on, will be put in spoiler tags with only the specific character(s) name before it. Everyone is free to click on these spoiler tags, but it's assumed that only the character(s) know it. So if you find a valuable treasure but noone else is around, you can pocket it. All players may know this, but their characters won't, so if a thief is looking for goods he won't know to steal said item from you.

Finally, the group knows the value of sticking together in a dangerous dungeon, and will automatically attempt to do so. This means that any inactive players won't be left behind. If the majority of the group is heading down a pathway, any characters that aren't doing something else will follow along, unless they specifically state they are not following the group. In addition, if someone is exploring alone they can call the group (just say something like "I think there's something this way. Let's Go!") to come with them, and if the group isn't busy they will follow. This way, active players get all the benefits of having the full group with them, and inactive players don't get left behind.
Battle:
Battle is initiated whenever a hostile creature approaches a player or the group, or when players attack a creature. As soon as battle starts, the free roam main phase is put on hold for the battle phase. Each creature in the battle is given an attack order, based off of the number of players. So if there are 10 players, the creature will randomly be given a number from one to ten. Initially, after that many initiative points have been spent the creature will take action, and will then take action after ten more initiative points are spent. If there are 15 players, the creature will be given a number from one to fifteen, will attack after that many points are spent then each 15 points afterwards.

Players are given a number of initiative points dependent upon the number of players. Anyone may spend any and/or all of their points at any time. So if a player has three initiative points, you can attack three times; or move closer, attack, and move farther away; or attack once and save your other two points.

There are three ways to attack:
Close: Your character must be expected close enough to actually attack your opponent. Examples of this include swords and physical attack. With close attacks you're in more immediate danger than ranged, but your weapons generally deal more damage and, because of your proximity you usually get first chance to loot the corpse/room.
Ranged: Weapons can be used from as far away as you can see the enemy or as close as you dare to be. Meaning if you're in the same room, most times you can, but if there's a wall/obstacles between you, or the room is so huge that you can't see all the way across, you cannot hit the enemy. Attacking ranged is usually safer than close, but your weapons do less damage and you generally won't get first chance at any loot.
Magic: Magical attacks usually work the same way as ranged, but especially powerful moves may have drawbacks such as Touch (acts as a close attack), Recoil (you'll take 10% of the damage you inflict), or Charge (takes a set time before reusable). Because of the ease with SPC but also the drawbacks, magic is the most versatile but also the most limited option.

Creatures will be much stronger than they are in the LoZ games. It'd be very difficult for a player to eliminate, for example, a Stalfos, by oneself. And it is extremely unlikely to defeat an octorok with only one attack. Because of this, it's strongly encouraged that the party does not split up, and instead tackles all rooms/enemies together if at all possible.

Finally, if you so choose or have no weapons available, all characters have the option of a physical attack. All physical attacks are close attacks, deal 1-3 +L damage, except in the case of gorons who have a 2-4 +L damage physical attack.
Shop:
Money is in the form of Rupees (obviously), and to simplify things there is no limit to the number of rupees you can carry. That being said, they are not as useless as in many of the games, and in addition to the shopkeep here, you may find Business Deku Scrubs in the dungeons that you can spend your Rupees on.

You are also free to sell/trade/give items and Rupees to any other player at any non-battle time, assuming you're in a position to do so. (If your character is next to another; yes. If you're on opposite sides of a chasm; no.)

All items can be bought for cost, and any items can be sold for 50% of their cost.

Sword Sharpening - 75 Rupees (+2-4 damage; lasts for 1 dungeon)(any sword/blade)
Short Sword - 125 Rupees (1-6 damage)
Long Sword - 200 Rupees (2-8 damage)
Slingshot - 100 Rupees (1-4 damage; ranged)(Comes with 25 bullets.)
Bullets (25) - 50 Rupees
Bullets (100) - 150 Rupees
Burst Spell - 75 Rupees (5 MP)(1-4 damage; magic)
Heal Spell - 75 Rupees (8 MP)(+1-5 health; target ally)
Barrier - 150 Rupees (20 MP)(Protects entire party from next L*5 damage)
Wood Shield - 45 Rupees (+2 Defense Bonus) Can be burned.
Metal Shield - 120 Rupees (+2 Defense Bonus)

In addition to what I have to offer, I will provide a reward program. Any items found in a dungeon can be turned in to the shop. When you spend your time vanquishing evil in the next dungeon, the shopkeep will spend his time replicating the item. When you return again, he will have that item to sell to everyone. In addition, you will get 10% of the item's cost back as a reward for investing in the shop, and then get either the item back or 50% of it's cost, whichever you choose.
FAQ:
Q: How can you "lose" a weapon or item?
A: Well, besides the wood shield burning in the fire, you can lose something to a Like Like, sell/trade/give them, or even drop a sword as you're falling so you can use both hands to catch yourself. Any way you can think of that you can "lose" something is a possibility.
Q: What are these "random values" you mention?
A: When I say a random value, in the traditional sense it is a dice roll. I use the official D&D online dice roller. Any rolls including a 0 possibility will use the next sized dice (example: 0-5 will use a 6 sided dice) with the last number representing the 0.

Remember that this is very much a work in progress and an experiment. Feel free to PM me any questions and/or ideas you may have. Any small issues will be cleared up immediately. Any actual rule changes will be handled between dungeons. Regardless of any rule changes, anything that happened in the dungeons previously still happened, even if it wouldn't have happened that way as the rules are now.

I have a question: if I've never played any D&D style games, do you think I'll still be able to keep up and understand what I'm doing, or no?

That's perfect I-am-link! I'll add it to the OP and such. So, a fight-based all-around character, huh?

425: Yes, of course. This is much simpler than D&D itself, but even so, the most complicated thing you'll need to do is your character creation and spend your bonus points and shop between dungeons and level-ups. And keeping track of your own inventory (if you shoot all shots with your slingshot, then you obviously can't use it anymore). Other than that, you simply explore the dungeons and fight, and all the math and "complicated" things are handled by me. The biggest reason for this is because I feel it will draw more players, but also the fact that things are much more limited over a forum than around a table.

Awesome. Fierce.Deity, your stats are a little off; PM'd you.

Added you both to the characters list, only need a few more before we can tackle our first dungeon!

EDIT: Just out of curiosity, what/why is everyone putting as their "motivation" part?

Haha, well originally when I put "motivation" I meant like "Why are you fighting evil"? So you'd put I'm trying to find my sister who a giant bird-thing took from me (Wind Waker lulz)(or whatever), but it appears you started a format and everyone followed in suit, i-am-link. =D

EDIT: Also, the motivation things aren't necessary, but help me to make the story better customized. For example, if one person is looking for their sister (example above) and another is trying to solve the mystery of "insert a Zelda mystery here" then in one dungeon I can have like "ancient writing describing [mystery]" or in the next dungeon you find your sister's doll so you know you're on the right track. Things like that. =]

Oh, I'll do a "why I am fighting evil" motivation:

I am a mercenary, and I work for the highest price. Hence the "neutral" alliance.

Awesome, thanks for joining. =] Added information to the top post.

As a side note, don't forget to visit the shop. SPC strong characters (sheika) would benefit from getting a spell or two and such. You all start with 100 Rupees to spend, and you can barter with other players/the shopkeep for more rupees if you want to buy something more expensive. The shop is limited but after any dungeons you can have the opportunity to expand his wares.

First off you die when you reach 0 HP and aren't revived. (You can be revived by bottled fairies, or possibly revival spells/abilities when the game progresses.) If you die, you can take the crushing heartache of virtual death seriously and stop playing (D=), or you can start another character. If you choose to continue, you can make your new character different to try to overcome whatever weakness caused you death. You can also re-make your old character, but in-game he'd effectively be an entirely new character, meaning the other characters won't know you and such.

Whatever point we are, you'll be skipped up to that level. So if the party has reached L8 and you make a new character/die/whatever, you'll be skipped up to L8, but you won't have any items you've collected and your new character wouldn't know everything that has been learned (like if there's a multi-dungeon puzzle (or other type of thing where knowledge from an old dungeon can help in future dungeons)) that may gain you benefits in the future. Other characters may have looted your body, so any items you had could still be available, though it's up to them to give/sell them to you. That being said, it is free-style, so any character who would want to help the new adventurer can give you items/rupees/knowledge/etc. to catch you up more. (Meaning if you die, but you make a new character and 425's character decides to help you then he can, but if no one decides to help you, you'd basically be L8 stats with L1 experience.)

TL;DR: If you die, your character dies. You can start a new character if you chose, but your old character and everything associated with it is dead.
