Story
The story unfolds in Ordon Village, a small farmering town in Southern Ordon Province. One day a character named Rusl gets instructions to deliver a gift to the Royal Family of Hyrule, but he offers the job to Link instead. Link agrees to deliver the gift, and gets ready to leave in two days. The next day, Link is given a Fishing Rod and uses it to catch a fish for the cat that wouldn't leave the pond. He then gets a Bottle in return.
Deep in the southern most region of the kingdom of Hyrule lies a village by the name of Ordan. Cradled in the scenic beauty of pristine farmland, the villagers of Ordan make a living by raising livestock. Among the villagers is a boy known as the most skillful rider in all the land. A boy who, it is expected, will take over the responsibility of leading Ordan as the village chief. His name is Link.
Trusted and liked by all the villagers, Link is especially loved by the other children of Ordan, among who he holds unofficial status as the leader of the pack. Link spends his days as a ranch hand and learns the ways of the sword from the village's lone swordsman, Rusl, in his spare time. He often displays his newly honed skills to the village youths, which makes him even more popular.

Link saves up money to buy a Slingshot, and then shows the local kids how to use it. After the lesson, Link is given a Wooden Sword, and shows the kids how to use that as well. This acts as a kind of tutorial to get the player used to using the sword. After that lesson, a monkey comes out of the woods and the kids decide to chase it. Unfortunately, one of the kids (Talo) and the monkey gets caught in a trap and Link has to go save them.
One day, Link is showing off his swordsmanship as usual, when a monkey appears. "Hey! That's the monkey that has been causing trouble all over the village! Lets get him", cry the children. They run after the monkey into the forest. Link rushes into the heart of the woods after them and is shocked to find that the dark thickets are teeming with countless monsters. After fighting his way through their ranks, Link rescues the child and the monkey from the cage where they are held captive.

The next morning, after herding goats, Link is ready to go. Link's friend Ilia notices that Epona is injured and takes her away to Ordon Spring to heal her. When Link goes to the spring to get her back, the Bulblin King and some Bulblin Riders come crashing through the gate. They kidnap Ilia and the other children, and scare Epona away.  Link is knocked unconscious by a rider, and left there alone. Link soon wakes up and runs across the bridge towards the woods.  He is pulled through a newly placed black wall by a Twilight Beast, who drops him when a Triforce Symbol appears on his hand.  Soon after entering the Twilight, Link turns into a wolf and then faints. Link is taken to Hyrule Castle and imprisoned in the cellars. There, he meets Midna, a mysterious character who doesn't fully reveal who she is and helps Link escape. He finally makes it to the top of the tallest tower, where he meets Princess Zelda for the first time. She tells him of the recent battle that ensued in Hyrule. Zant, an evil sorcerer, and his Twilight Beasts have killed many soldiers, and how she was forced to surrender.
Until now, the forest had been a safe place...

The next day, after much encouragement from Rusl, Link prepares to set out and deliver the village's tribute to Hyrule Castle. Having never visited the castle before, Link is in high spirits as he prepares for his journey, but when his childhood friend Ilia notice's a wound on Epona's haunch, she gives Link an earful for being so careless with his horse. In a huff, Ilia leads Epona away.

Link tracks down Eopna and Ilia at the mystical spring nearby and attempts to apologize for injuring Epona. But no matter how many times he says he's sorry, Ilia simply refuses to forgive Link. Then Colin, a young boy from the village who idolizes Link, steps forward to mediate the situation. Thanks to Colin's explanation, Link is fianlly able to get Ilia to drop her gaurd and talk with him. Having warmed back up, Ilia tells Link, "Come back safely, and don't do anything reckless!"

Just then...

A monster astride a huge bear comes crashing out of the forest. The fearsome monster and its mount break through the gate to the spring and attack the youths. Caught off gaurd by the sudden assault, Link is helpless t stop the monster from delivering a blow that renders him unconscience. Through the fog of his half-conscience mind, Link watches Colin and Ilia get swept away off by the monster..

Link soon wakes up and runs across the bridge towards the woods.  He is pulled through a newly placed black wall by a Twilight Beast, who drops him when a Triforce Symbol appears on his hand.  Soon after entering the Twilight, Link turns into a wolf and then faints. Zant, an evil sorcerer, and his Twilight Beasts have killed many soldiers, and how she was forced to surrender.

After leaving Zelda, Link and Midna escape from the Twilight and return to Ordon, where they acquire the Ordon Sword and the Ordon Shield. On their way back to the Twilight, Link and Midna are stopped outside Ordon Spring where they meet Ordona, a Light Spirit. Link and Midna then go to the Twilight-covered Faron Woods where they meet the shattered remains of the Light Spirit Faron. He instructs them  to find the Tears of Light to restore light to the Faron Province. Once they meet the revitalized Faron, Link finds out that he is the chosen hero of destiny.
