At night, temperatures drop so that Cold Resistance Level 2 is required.  To boost cold resistance, Link can wear the Snowquill set (purchased at Rito Village). The Ruby Circlet, purchased at the Starlight Memories jewelry store in Gerudo Town, also provides cold resistance. Link can also consume Cold Resistance elixirs or foods for a temporary boost to his cold resistance.  A variety of recipes are available for creating cold-resistant foods or elixirs.

In addition to extreme temperatures, travel through the Gerudo Desert is complicated by sandstorms which can cause a loss of visibility. Deep sand also slows down travel. Wearing Sand Boots can help improve movement through sand, and travelling by Sand Seal is the preferred method for travelling long distances.  Trained Sand Seals can be rented in Gerudo Town and untrained Sand Seals can be caught in various places throughout the Gerudo Desert.  A shield is required in order to travel by Sand Seal. If Link tries to travel to far in the desert, a large sandstorm blocks his path and he is not able to go further.

If Link tries to travel to far in the desert, a large sandstorm blocks his path and he is not able to go further. Traversing the Gerudo Desert is an arduous task for Link, as the sand hampers his movement. To counter this, Link can obtain the Sand Boots from Bozai, who runs along the eastern corner of Gerudo Town.

The desert is littered with the bones of gigantic creatures long dead and forgotten, aside from the Gerudo Great Skeleton, which is the only complete skeletal remains in the desert of such nature, as the rest appear to be reduced to ribcages and vertebrae. Most of the Gerudo buildings in the desert are reduced to ruins and partly buried in the sand.

To the southwest, the Gerudo Desert appears to be connected to vast lands beyond which are inaccessible through the game; it happens to be the only location in Hyrule with said land connections, as the rest of Hyrule is bordered by either the sea, or by deep gorges.
