I have a headcanon for Hyrule Warriors/Legends that Adventure Mode is actually the warriors campaigning to explore the world beyond that of the Hyrule in which the story takes place, and that the need to unlock each sector of the map through various challenges is a curse placed by the dark ruler of each map.
