DarkestLink, you may like AoL, 100% linear yet still fairly open. You can't get to the 3rd dungeon without the 1sts item or the hammer, which you still need the candle for. However, there is still a lot of real estate to explore.

Open exploration is a great tool for story development, but not one that would fit with the standard elements of Link and the main quest. If Zelda were to take more of open story, or even have a canon spinoff that delved more into the open gameplay, I think both the games and the story would be more fluid.

Exploration in AoL plays more like Final Fantasy than Zelda.

And maybe that's what the series should look at. Classic RPG's like FF and Ultima gave a lot of inspiration to the modern open world games. Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Bioshock. They have to be doing something right to be such HUGE success's outside of our cultures want for something new.

Not a big fan of 2D Zelda and I found AoL to be too non-linear.

That's the funny thing. It only seems non-linear. You have to get the item from each successive dungeon to access the next area.
