I wouldn't really like too see a new 2D Zelda game anytime soon. I'm not against 2D, i love that in a world full of HD consoles and 3D abominations, that Nintendo rocked the wii with some awesome 2D games like New Super Mario Bros and Kirby;Return to Dreamland. (Just like how the Wii rocked the Rail Shooter, i love that genre, so overlooked imo.)
But I think as far as Zelda goes, it is time to really push it forward. Nintendo look like they're trying to do that with SS, if they were to put out more 3D titles on the 3DS as well as the WiiU then Zelda would certainly start selling well again. SS may not have done as well as other Zelda installments in sales but 3million is still pretty decent. Imagine those sales for a 3DS game? The gaming community wants to love Zelda, its just Nintendo make it hard sometimes and even after a very rich history of 2D titles like ALttP, LA and MC, it is the 3D titles that most people want and that is no bad thing. Even if the new 3D handheld titles were as short as MM or heck even shorter, no one is going to mind, but we can rest safely in the knowledge that the 3DS can hold all of OoT and more if you factor in the Master Quest and boss rush modes. We could really see a 3D Zelda on a grande scale on the 3ds. The 3DS would also serve as a good experimentation console which nintendo could learn from for home console releases.
It'd be naive of me to say hat we have seen all we could ever see from the 2D genre as far as Zelda is concerned because that isn't true but really it is the 3D everyone wants and the 3D installments are what are i need of evolution and change and I for one would like to see nintendo continue with their progression rather than working on 2D titles.
