A Link Between Worlds Why the Sand Rod?

What was Osfala thinking when he rented the sand rod to go to Eastern Palace, where there is NO sand...the fire or ice rod would be a better choice, or pretty much anything else. Because all the sand rod does is make sand walls. That's it. It doesn't harm monsters, with the obvious exception of the sand dwelling ones. And it needs sand to work.

Anyone else think the same thing?

Yea I've been thinking about it for some time know. There's several paths that I think why Osfala rented the Sand Rod from Ravio.

1. He didn't know any better and just assumed that the Sand Rod was the best possible choice for his quest.

2. Maybe Osfala actually wanted to investigate the Sand Temple and either he actually went to the Sand Temple or or was informed of the mishaps that were happening in the Eastern Palace and headed out for his new destination.

That's all I can think up when it comes to Osfala and his reason why he chose the Sand Rod. Hopefully other members can elaborate more and once then, I will make more connections! ^^

I thought it was subtle way of developing his character. Osfala was arrogant and believed he would be the Hero to save Hyrule, that's why he went into the dungeon in the first place. But the Sand Rod was, as you say, totally useless in the Eastern Palace which means he had no idea what he was rushing into. Rather than take a more all-round useful item, like a Bow or Hookshot, he took a highly specialised item with a limited use. It made me think that he was being arrogant in his choice, that he was more or less expecting to find sand in there and that he believed he'd be able to deal with any and all other obstacles on his own.

I suppose I came to that view since I didn't know what to expect and so rented everything available before tackling most dungeons, to ensure I was adequately equipped and prepared. Osfala didn't do that, he just assumed the sand rod would be all he needed and went with it. It fit with what I understood of his character and I liked how it was in there.

2 reasons 1:the more likely reason is that he had no idea what the eastern palace was like so he just got something 2:you can stun enemies with the sand rod so he might have gotten it so he could stun all the enemies in the dungeon.

It's a good thing he didn't take the bow...Eastern Palace requires it.

But yeah. Either he thought there would be sand in there, or...something. Also I like Fig's thought about maybe he was going to the desert and then he heard about what was happening, and didn't care to go back to Ravio to get something else.

He was planning a trip to the beach and wanted to make the bestest sand castles EVAH!

I don't know. It seems like one of those contrived game-item fetch / difficulty thingies that never make any sense in videogames. I rather like Cfrock's take on it - that it is a hint to his arrogant-yet-ignorant personality.

Useless Sand Rod is Useless anywhere but the desert.

Damnit, I was gonna write this thread....

Anyway, Ravio said he was in a hurry, that's probably why, he didn't have time to think.

Maybe he did some weed and didn't even bother to think about it.

I'd always thought it was probably alluding to the Desert Palace in Lorule, but of course there are many possibilities and theories as to why he may have chosen it. Like Cfrock said, it could be a way to develop his character, as he believes he's supposed to be the Hero. Also, you have to save Osfala in order to even enter the Desert Palace, so it portrays him as an even more important character than he already was. Or it's possible he was in a hurry, or even it was the producer's decision to have him wield an item that Link did not yet require.

In Kakariko Village you have to use the sand rod to find a maiamai. Maybe he thought a cuccoo was hidden somewhere :P
Nah seriously, maybe he was originally heading to the Desert Palace but heard about the events going on and then he could have heard about the Easter Palace being in danger and headed over there. He could have thought the sand rod was a mighty weapon against Yuga and like Cfrock said he was arrogant and thought nothing could stop him. It is a cool thing though you needed to search for him to get the sand Rod back

I don't think there's any real story as to why he chose the sand rod, its what he picked or rather what Nintendo picked, I doubt there was any forethought on the characters part, the game offers two realistic possible explanations as to a rather unwise item choice both have already been mentioned, theories as to why are interesting but I think the answer may be as simple as its what the developnent team wanted in thier game, there isn't much else to explain the sand rod choice that isn't just simply fan fiction.

Started my Hero Mode. Met Osfala while in the car, headed home from a long, strange journey. I took a long time beating my first game (just savoring the game, playing mostly on car trips, less at home), so I had forgotten his arrogance early in the game. Getting a re-schooling in that now...

Yes, Osfala, you will be the invincible Hero with the Sand Rod - AT MAKING SAND CASTLES. You will be the Hero of the Beach! Going into that rather mundane, sand-devoid Eastern Palace, however, you were just asking for trouble. And now, you're a painting. It's not even a sand-painting. How about that, smart guy?

I agree with shadow blade that the developers just picked it probably because they wanted you to have to wait to enter the desert temple
