A Link to the Past Title Confusion

Hello fellow ZDr's!
I was always confused by the title of the great zelda game "A Link to the Past." It confuses me. I dont know if they are referencing the Hero of Time, or as the Angry Video Game Nerd said, It could be a play on words.
Someone please help me!

Only Nintendo of America knows the truth. Original subtitle was "Triforce of the Gods", but NoA didn't like "Gods" is the subtitle (too religious), and changed it to this strange "A Link to the Past".

I remember reading somewhere that the title implies that the game takes place before the first two games and, at the time, making it the first game in the timeline.

That must be fake, because the Master Sword must of been destroyed (LoZ&Ganon) Or, it could of been hidden or protected.
