I think your DSi probably broke the game.

Your game is not broken. The l or r button is jammed and will register as l or r when playing, therefore pulling out your item. Try pulling it out or get a new system. This happened to me and i got a 3ds to replace it.

i honestly do NOT think its your game, you say you droped your ds, i think doing that may have damaged your touch screen a damaged touch screen, or even putting a non nintendo brand screen protector on the touch screen can cause many issues like that i know it did for me ;(

Do the other games work in it? and was ST in the console when you dropped it?
