Newbie question in Dark souls (remastered) on switch

Hi All

I am brand new to this Game and playing D.S for the 1st time .

I am in a situation where I do not seem to find a way to populate the sorcery slot(or magic slot ...i suppose).

I have attached images with text , to show what I mean.

I can not equip the 'soul arrow' or 'hidden weapon' etc , because the top slot is empty and remains empty.

what am I doing different here please ?
any D.S Guru here ?

You need to attune spells to that slot at a bonfire.
