How Did the Name Link Get the Name Link ??

The default name when you are naming your character is Link in all games I'm pretty sure. So it's not like it was made up by fans or anything.
As other posters have said, his name was chosen because he serves as the link between the player and the game. The link between our world and Hyrule.

He was named after Abraham Lincoln. Miyamoto was an avid reader of American history and idolized Lincoln. Lincoln--->Linkon--->Link.

Nah, I'm just kidding . Like many have already said above, Link is a "link" for the player to the game.

I want to say that the name was chosen by the creators of Zelda because he is the "Link" between the player and the game.
Yes, He can have any name which can help him be a link for you to the game but it is easier to refer to him as Link on the forums.
