After BotW where can the series go?

They could do like Dragon Age Inquisition or W3 and instead of having just one open world they could have several large areas. This would make the game world bigger overall and allow them to put more processing power into visuals. BoTW's world isn't exactly a pleasant sight to behold sometimes with muddy texturing being a common sight.

Scrap or improve the annoying weapon breaking system. If it really must return repair kits should become a thing and weapons should only lose attack power as they degrade rather than completely break.

They could introduce levelling. Encouraging the player to seek combat to earn experience. This could be used to unlock new sword techniques.

Defining BotW's identity. If its the physics or even the runes, will help us think of what could possibly come next. The runes are tied into the Sheikah Slate, would another game set in a different version of Hyrule at a different time be able to still use runes? Are runes how items will be used from now on or was this simply a once only thing for BotW? Its impossible to tell.

Love runes. We don't need a Sheikah slate to perform those techniques in future though if it doesn't fit with the story. Magic could be used to do the exact same things.

Use a well thought out villain with good characterisation. Calamity ganon is a generic evil for evils sake without having a cool persona to go with it. This makes it as poor as Malladus, Bellum and Demise.

Put more focus on story and writing. The story feels too optional in BoTW. Story has always been the main focus since ALTTP and it was a good way of doing things which didn't need changing. The story progression could also affect the game world. In OOT you awaken to a ravaged Hyrule soon after the first three dungeons. In TP you gradually free the land from Twilight.

Do a different era. Post apocalyptic Hyrule has been done now. Let's see a Hyrule in its prime. I even wouldn't mind a more futuristic cyberpunk Hyrule.

-Castle town is like Vegas
-King Hyrule owns the wealthiest casino
-Ganondorf is a vagabond trucker that kidnaps Zelda for ransom of the sacred treasure (Triforce)
-Zant/Ghirahim (puppet villain) is a mafia don rigging casino games
-Malon is a hot biker chick in Link's HMC (Hyrule Master Cycle Club)
-Also give him Mario Kart 8's Master Cycle
-Telma owns a strip joint.

Modern/futuristic Zelda. These ideas are free Nintendo, jussayin.

Nintendo already had that idea for Breath of the Wild as well, lol.

Theoretically if the Switch does well (as it probably will since they're still impossible to find), they could easily churn out a new Zelda adventure in a few years like they did with Majora's Mask since OoT did take several years to develop as well. I'm not very far in BotW but the next one could bring back more traditional dungeons and the like. Maybe the setting could be a Hyrule set in a steampunk industrial revolution (only components of plotlines notably Skyward Sword did this...).
