Zelda-U-Open-World-750x400 In a recent interview with Gamereactor Magazine, series director Eiji Aonuma gave fans a little more information concerning the upcoming Zelda Wii U title; not only will it be the first real open-world Zelda game, Aonuma promises that the game will “support as large of a world as the Wii U hardware can handle.” Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

Gamereactor’s full interview with Aonuma can be found in the latest issue of Gamereactor Magazine, in which he discusses both Zelda Wii U and Majora’s Mask 3D. Here are some pulled quotes from Aonuma regarding Zelda Wii U.

“A huge, seamlessly unfolding world is something that can’t be achieved if the hardware isn’t advanced enough… Ever since we made the very first generation of Legend of Zelda games though, we’ve had as large a world as can be realised with the hardware, so you could say it was inevitable that we’ve now done the same with the new Wii U title.”

“When I first showed off the new Zelda game on the Wii U, it seemed everyone was very excited and started proclaiming that a Zelda game had at last become open world! Zelda games have always allowed you to roam and explore a huge world… What’s changed now is that the hardware has progressed to the point that you can now explore this vast world seamlessly; the underpinning of the game hasn’t changed.”

It looks like this is matching a lot of the fan speculation from last November about how all those mountains way off in the background can be reached. After hearing about this they just might be. This interests me because in other games like Skyrim I love to wander way off out into the stretches of nothing for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Other than just seeing if I can make it on top of that mountain. Here’s hoping we get some quicker transportation later on in the game than running and riding horses.

Are you excited for an open-world Zelda? Are you hoping the game will veer towards a more Skyrim-esque style of play, or are you glad to hear that the underpinning of this Zelda game hasn’t changed? Let us know in the comments!
