Even with the release of

Majora’s Mask 3D behind us, we still have an extremely exciting year ahead for Zelda fans with the release of the next truly “new” game in the series: Zelda U. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait too long to learn more about it. In a recent interview with gaming publication Gamereactor, Aonuma not only discussed Majora’s Mask 3D, but also talked a little bit about the still mysterious Zelda U. Among the aspects he touched upon were the sheer size of the in-game world in the Wii U title, indicating that it will be as large a world as the console can handle.

Aonuma’s comments are as follows:

“A huge, seamlessly unfolding world is something that can’t be achieved if the hardware isn’t advanced enough. . . “Ever since we made the very first generation of Legend of Zelda games though, we’ve had as large a world as can be realised with the hardware, so you could say it was inevitable that we’ve now done the same with the new Wii U title.

When I first showed off the new Zelda game on the Wii U, it seemed everyone was very excited and started proclaiming that a Zelda game had at last become open world! Zelda games have always allowed you to roam and explore a huge world.

What’s changed now is that the hardware has progressed to the point that you can now explore this vast world seamlessly; the underpinning of the game hasn’t changed.”

— Eiji Aonuma

Given that Aonuma previously indicated that the world of Zelda U would be about as large as Kyoto, it’s not truly surprising to see that its pushing the Wii U to its limit. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to hear that the development team is maximizing their utilization of the console. Additionally, given the size of other Wii U titles, namely Xenoblade Chronicles X (and its FIVE continents to explore), we are getting closer to understanding just how large this world could be.
