Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has made a major impact on the franchise ever since he joined the team nearly 25 years ago as a director and lead designer on Ocarina of Time. This is why it should come as no surprise that the current head of the Zelda team is being recognized for his outstanding work in the gaming field. This isn’t just any kind of recognition either, as the French Ministry of Culture recently announced that Eiji Aonuma will be recognized as a “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.”

For those unaware, the Order of Arts and Letters (or l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) is a French order whose purpose is to recognize those who have made substantial contributions to either the arts, literature, or even the dispersion of these fields. Some of the people from within the video game industry to have also received this knighting include Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Rayman creator Michel Ancel, and game designer Peter Molyneux.

As of this writing, there has been no date yet set for the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters acknowledgment ceremony. Speaking of the man set to be knighted, Aonuma has not yet released a statement about this recognition. Suffice to say, that’s not a bad accolade to have on your résumé when it comes to being a video game designer.

Recruited by The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Aonuma’s influence on the series can be seen all the way up to Tears of the Kingdom. Regardless of what you think of his development style, Aonuma has helped bring forth multiple Zelda titles that we all absolutely adore.

What do you think of this news? Were you surprised to hear that Eiji Aonuma is going to be knighted? Let us know in the comments below!
