Zelda Runners – Time Warp

Welcome back to another Zelda Runners. I’m Euan, and over the next 5 or 6 scrolls (or directional arrow key taps, I won’t judge), I’ll bring you bang up to date with all the latest Zelda speedrunning news. Today, we’re talking Zelda II Tournaments, Randomizer updates, and stopping time in Majora’s Mask (but not as you know it). So, without any more hesitation, put your hands on your hips, and bring your knees in tight…

Now Playing

The Zelda II All Keys Tournament has made it to the elimination stage. 34 competitors have now been whittled down to just 16, who will now go through a single bracket elimination over the next few weeks to find the overall winner. To see the bracket, schedule, and make predictions on the final result, head on over to the tournament’s Challonge.

The A Link to the Past Randomizer has been updated to V31.0.3. This small update includes various quality of life changes, such as hint text changes and various flag changes, as well as logic changes in glitched states, and some other musical updates. To see a more extensive change log, see this document. To find out more about the A Link to the Past Randomizer, head on over to the Discord server.

Finally, the Wind Waker Randomizer tournament has been postponed to the 30th November. Once again, to find out more information, and view the tournament’s brakcet, check out the Challonge page.

Glitch Exhibition

This week’s Glitch Exhibition takes us back to the world of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Previously in this section I’ve covered a glitch known as Bottle on B, which opens up a whole bunch of broken possibilities in both games. This week however, we’re taking a look at a glitch which not only sets up Bottle on B, but also has many other purposes, some more useful than other.

This glitch, known as Quickdraw, allows Link to instantly hold an item, without going through the animation of pulling it out. While this doesn’t seem like too big a deal, it has some fairly interesting and important uses.

There are two methods to achieve Quickdraw. The first simply requires the player to jump into a body of water and, just as Link lands, pull out an item. If done correctly, the next time the player goes to use the item, it will Quickdraw.

The second method is more widely used for the other properties it has. Trying to draw your sword while shielding certain types of damage will result in Link Quickdrawing the weapon. This method uses either damage which applies over multiple frames (such as Bombs or Bombchus), or two separate damage sources in succession. This is usually done as Child Link. Adult Link can activate Quickdraw using this method, but it can only be done on one frame during the damage, and must also be carried out in front of a wall.

Not only does this make Link Quickdraw his sword, but it also sets the flag for the last button press as B. This single change can lead to Bottle on B, which is the main use for this glitch. It can also be used to Cucco jump over to Gerudo Fortress as Child Link, as Quickdrawing allows Link to jump slash in midair much faster.

An extension of this glitch is known as Action Swap. By switching from one item to another using Quickdraw, then using this new item, various effects can take place. The most commonly use of this sees the runner Quickdraw from any first person item to Deku Sticks as Adult Link. Upon using these twice, Link will shoot a Fire Arrow without having ever acquired the Fire Arrow item.

There are, however, many many other outcomes depending on the combination of items used. For example, switching from a first person item to a Deku Stick, then lighting this on a torch will result in a very long, upside down Deku Stick (the whole premise of the Dank% category is to achieve this as quickly as possible). Switching from the Slingshot to Kokiri Sword will play the Wasteland music. There are loads of other combinations, and you can see them all in this handy spreadsheet.

These glitches are commonly found in runs of both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. The next glitch, however, is almost always found only in the latter. Time plays a big part in Majora’s Mask, and anyone who’s struggled fitting everything they want to do into one 3 day cycle will have, at some point, wished they could stop time. Well, friends, I have some good news for you. You can.

Sort of. The Time Stop isn’t technically misnamed – it stops time, if only briefly. Any overworld movements, such as enemies and movable terrain, are stopped, while Link is still free to move around. This is useful for any time based puzzles, such as entering Stone Tower Temple.

There are various methods to activate this glitch. The first uses a Bottle. Catch an item so that Link is holding the Bottle in his hand. Hold target, wait briefly, then press and hold R to shield, then quickly press the button to which the Bottled Item is assigned.

Gossip Stones can also be used. Approach one so that the A Button changes to “Check”. Pull out the Ocarina of Time, then quickly press B to cancel. This should activate the glitch.

Finally, death is an option. Lower your health to 1/2 a heart or less, then find a Heart drop. Position Link just over a sidehop’s distance away from the Heart, then place a Bomb. Just before the explosion, sidehop towards the Heart, so that Link dies from the explosion in midair, then lands on the Heart.

After triggering the glitch, Link will move relative to the direction of the camera at the time of activation. This could be inverted, so it might take a few moments to adjust. To cancel the glitch, simply press C Up, or activate an area transition. Happy Time Warping!

Final Split

Game Break Days – 22nd Nov ~ 29th Nov – A marathon event held in Germany, raising funds for Stiftung Deutsche KinderKrebshilfe, a German Cancer charity. The event itself features two (2) A Link to the Past Randomizer runs, as well as Majora’s MaskCeleste, and Super Metroid.

Bingothon Winter 2019 – 29th Nov ~ 1st Dec – The Bingo event to end all bingo events, Bingothon returns for another round at the end of the month. Featuring runs such as Ocarina of Time Randomizer, Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion Double Bingo, and Final Fantasy IV bingo, there really is something for everyone. The event is raising money for the Pure Earth charity. (It’s also co-run by previous Spotlight runners Floha, Pikastroff, and Harmjan!)

Really Really Long A Thon – 1st Dec ~ 15th Dec – A marathon dedicated to long runs, the criteria is simple. The run must be over 4 hours long, or be accepted as the longest category within the game. Ever craved a 67 hour Shin Megami Tensei block (roughly the amount of time I spend per day playing Triforce Heroes)? This is the marathon for you.

And finally, here’s this week’s Breath of the What Just Happened? For all the people complaining that Nintendo’s final bosses were too easy, I didn’t think they’d go and make them immortal…

See you later!

Euan is the host of Zelda Dungeon’s Speedrunning series, Zelda Runners. He can be found on Twitter and don’t worry, he doesn’t spend 67 hours a day playing Triforce Heroes. Please don’t call anyone, or start an intervention.
