Hi everyone! Welcome back to our Weekly Feature: Zelda Fan of the Week. For those who don’t know, we take a fan (or a group of them) each week and we post their works. These could be comics, art, cosplay, music or anything related to The Legend of Zelda. For this opportunity we have two Graphic Design students that had a very interesting assignment in one of their classes: Make a puzzle with only cardboard.

Adriana and Moises are in their third semester in college and according to them this has been their favorite assignment so far. Even though many ideas came to their minds, they knew that they wanted to do something incredible. Actually, I used to study with these artists, and ever since I saw their first work, I knew they were going to make a great team. After spending some time looking for them, luck hit me and I managed to make a short interview that allowed me to understand why they chose

Majora’s Mask as an inspiration and their true thoughts about their puzzle.

Amelia: Who had the idea of making the puzzle about The Legend of Zelda?

-Moises: Even though I was really unsure about the puzzle’s theme, I knew I wanted something related to video games. I like fantasy stories a lot and by having that thought, TLOZ was the first thing that came to my mind. I also knew that Adriana has a deep love for it, so after one day of thinking and choosing, we talked about it and we discovered that we were both excited about the Majora’s Mask idea.

-Adriana: We looked for many ideas, and after discussing it we agreed we wanted to do it with a Zelda theme. Our teacher picked the Deku image, it was the one she liked the most.

What were you thinking while doing it?

-Moises: The only thing that was going though our heads all the time was “we want to sleep”. Everyone else had to make 18 pieces for their puzzles, and we had two characters with 29 pieces each, plus Navi. Also, at the beginning it was really difficult to work with cardboard because it’s not easy to cut, but after a while we got used to it. We only wanted it to be perfect, and we didn’t care about anything else. I was very pleased with the final result.

-Adriana: During the process I must say, I only wanted to finish. It was a hard thing to do, and we had many little problems with the cardboard, the paint, etc. But personally speaking, I was extremely satisfied with the results.

I noticed that Navi is in the pictures, and she’s even one of your puzzle’s characters. She doesn’t appear much in the game so, can you explain to us why did you include her there?

-Adriana: Navi’s one of my favorite characters in The Legend of Zelda and since Majora’s Mask is the sequel to Ocarina of Time, I wanted to include her as a connection between what the teacher chose for us and what I really like about this two games.

Have you ever thought about selling it?

We would never sell it, we agreed that it was going to remain ours. We fell in love with it!

So, in Graphic Design terms, do you believe your puzzle can be decorative but also functional?

When we started to paint the pieces, we found out that they weren’t fitting how they should because the varnish we were using was extremely thick. After two days, the pieces dried completely and finally they fitted perfectly. So yes, we believe that besides being a beautiful puzzle it is also very functional and easy to assemble (if you follow the instructions of course). It also has a box to keep it safe with the same theme. We think it’s well made and for many

Zelda fans that have talked to us it’s really interesting. We enjoyed doing it but most important, we felt happy and proud of our work.

Thank you very much for your time, and good luck guys!

More than just pieces of cardboard glued together and painted, this is certainly a masterpiece. Artists, cosplayers, musicians, among others, keep surprising us every week and we really enjoy seeing the talent of the fans and their love for

The Legend of Zelda.
