The thousand years of raindrops summoned by my song are my tears. The thunder that strikes the earth is my anger!” — Flat (Majora’s Mask)

Beautiful, haunting, and iconic. These are three words to describe the “Song of Storms”, a short melody that debuted in Ocarina of Time. While there have been hundreds of covers of this song, this cover by Taryn Harbridge creates a wonderful and entertaining air of mystery.

The tune opens with the notes of a quiet piano drifting in, as if carried by a fast moving thunder storm. From that point an ocarina is added, supplying the melody as it is traditionally heard in Ocarina of Time. In the middle of the song, Harbridge introduces choral background, violin, and recorder to create a rich tapestry of sound.

One wonderful thing about this version of the “Song of Storms” is the way the sound rises and falls within the song. The rise and fall of the song gives a level of mystery and tension. The introduction and removal of instruments are also a highlight. For example, Harbridge strips the song down to its most basic at the midpoint of the song. This leaves the listener with just a piano and a human voice, which is hauntingly effective.
