Wooden Shields are shields that are made out of wood. They are typically the weakest shield and is a common first shield for Link to obtain.

Properties

Wooden shields can block most attacks but are highly susceptible to fire and leaves Link bereft of a shield. This is a weakness that only wooden shields possess, since all metal shields don't have a weakness that causes them to break. In Skyward Sword, they offer resistance to electricity to make up for their weakness.

Appearances

The Legend of Zelda

The Wooden Shield is the first shield Link starts with at the beginning of the first game. It is able to block some basic attacks such as arrows and rocks but cannot defend against magical attacks. This shield will not be eaten by Like Likes.

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Deku Shield

While the Wooden Shield does not appear in Ocarina of Time, it's counter part, the Deku Shield is the first shield obtained by Link in Ocarina of Time and can only be used as a child. The shield is purchased at the shop in Kokiri Forest for 40 rupees.

The shield will burn if it comes into contact with fire but a replacement can be purchased at any time.

The shield appears to be made from a piece of thick tree bark, the front of the shield is carved with a symbol representing the Kokiri Emerald and is painted red.

Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons

The Wooden Shield is the first shield found in both games and is indicated as L-1.

Twilight Princess

Ordon Shield from Twilight Princess

After Link transforms into his wolf form, Midna demands Link obtains a sword and shield. The Ordon Shield is "borrowed" from the Ordon villagers under the cover of night.

It's a small plain brown shield, and has a Ordonian goat's head and horns patterned onto it.

This is the only time Link can obtain this shield, if it is burnt, it's lost forever.

Wooden Shield from Twilight Princess

In the event the Ordon Shield is lost by fire, Link can purchase this Wooden Shield from the Malo Mart in Kakariko Village.

This shield is larger than the Ordon Shield but comes with the same weakness to fire. This shield can be purchased again if it becomes burnt.

The design on the front resembles something like a bird and appears to be painted with white paint.

This shield is generally considered a meaningless purchase due to the fact that it becomes available at the same time as the Hylian Shield, a far stronger and more preferable shield.

Skyward Sword

Wooden Shield from Skyward Sword

Unlike previous games, Link's shield now has a durability meter. This means that after a certain number of hits, it will break. However, if he thrusts your shield just as the attack is coming at him the shield will not take damage. As incentive for using this shield later in the game, it insulates Link from electricity-based attacks. This is the first shield obtainable in Skyward Sword. It's pathetically weak, and will break in just a few hits in its non-upgraded form. The Wooden Shield can be purchased for a very low price in Skyloft's Bazaar.

This shield is also obtainable by speaking with Instructor Owlan after Zelda falls out of the sky and you have to start your adventure. Getting the wooden shield for free at the beginning makes Faron woods much easier since you don't have to save up rupee's and buy the shield yourself.

Banded Shield

Main article: Banded Shield

An upgraded form of the Wooden Shield with a higher durability, this shield requires 2 Amber Relics, 1 Monster Claw, 1 Jelly Blob and 30 rupees to upgrade. Much more durable than the wooden shield, but still very weak. Burns from fire.

Braced Shield

Upgraded from the Banded Shield and more durable, this shield requires 3 Amber Relics, 2 Monster Claws, 2 Tumbleweeds, 1 Ornamental Skull and 50 rupees to upgrade. Although stronger it is still wood and can burn easily.
