Locke is a Zelda Dungeon Wiki administrator. I mostly concern myself with the wiki content infrastructure, such as Categories and Templates, and I'm also responsible for converting resources such as Interviews from their old site pages to their new home on the wiki. On the DGN Forums, I am a moderator specializing in the Zelda Theory sub-forum.

My name comes from John Locke the philosopher, via Ender's Game, not from a TV show or video game. If you wish to contact me, leave a message on my discussion page or PM me on the forums.

Projects

Right now my main project here at the wiki (and ZD in general) is to migrate resources from the site to the wiki, where they'll be more manageable.

Interviews

Main article: Category:Interviews

I NEED YOUR HELP! While most of the interviews we had on the old interviews page have been transferred to the wiki, I did so by simply copy/pasting the code from the old page. These means they're all horribly formatted. These all need to be edited to match the formatting and style of completed interview pages (you can find examples on the category page). I'll be continuously working on this, but it will be great to get people to help lighten the load.

Infrastructure

I've also taken to focus on how categories link up to construct an intuitive 'structure' to the articles. ...not much to say about that. Check out the category listings!

Templates

I try to make it easier for contributors to put together content by making useful, intuitive, and extensible templates. Some templates I've created or contributed to, or am working on:

  • Box — As an effort to standardize the appearance of side content, this meta-template is used by many other formatting templates.
  • Ambox — This meta-template is used as a standard for all article message boxes that appear at the tops of articles or sections.
  • Navbox — This meta-template is used for the footer navigation boxes.
  • MagicNavbox — I'm particularly proud of this version of Navbox, which in just one template (two if you count CD) automatically creates scores of footer navigations using just a few inputs.
  • Dump — In addition to bringing all the text dumps to the wiki, I created this template to retrieve individual quotes from said dumps so as to reduce copy errors and enforce validity.
  • Caption — Caption templates work with the Dump template to automatically retrieve Fi/Navi/etc. captions according to an article's title.
  • Cite — Right now, this merely enforces a standard format on references. Work is in progress to transform this template into a self-contained versatile reference system, replacing the Cite extension currently used (which uses <ref> and <references /> tags).
  • Foreach — I had a lot of fun with this template and am very happy with how potentially useful it is. It was created to help display several quotes in a row using Dump, but it works with many other templates as well, invoking several instances of the given template in sequence using a given set of values.

Pages

These are pages into which I've put an exceptional amount of work, or which were initiated or mainly driven by me.

Game Stats

A vast majority of my playthroughs are 100%. I've never done a 3-heart challenge, but I may consider it at some point. Most of the games I have played only once, but a few I haven't kept track of. Rankings (i.e. my relative opinion) probably aren't accurate.

Timeline

This is the timeline that I created and supported pre-Historia. Since the official timeline was released, this no longer matters, but I still like my timeline a bit better than the official one.

        |A-| |--B---| |-----C-----| |---D---|
Legend: MC - FS/FSA - LttP/OoX/LA - LoZ/AoL
History: SS - OoT - Great Flood - WW/PH - ST
                /MM - TP

A: Era of the Sky Savior; Creation of the Sacred Sword
B: Era of War Over and Sealing Of the Sacred Realm
C: Era of Evil's Return (LT - A Hero Appeared; AT - Hyrule Flooded)
D: Reconstruction Era

It still supports the three-way split after OoT, but instead of the cop-out "what-if", I use a retcon of sorts: LttP was the sequel to OoT until WW bumped it out of the way, then FSA replaced OoT as LttP's prequel. The stories along the vertical axis, i.e. in the same era but on different timelines, match up quite nicely.

Workbench

Main article: User:Locke/Sandbox

I like to use my user page to keep track of potential edits to actual pages. I experiment with markup here, propose organizational structures, and document information.

Shields

A familiar item, the Shield returns in Skyward Sword. Link has used the Shield in every Zelda main series title since the beginning. The Shield is controlled using the Nunchuck attatchment. Link uses this to defend against attacking enemies slashing with their weapons or shooting projectiles at him, just as we have seen before. Additionally, Link can use his Shield to deflect certain items back at enemies by players moving the Nunchuck in a forward, thrusting motion, an example being reflecting rocks back at Octoroks when they shoot towards him. It can quickly be held in defense following Sword combo. The Shield Link uses in Skyward Sword is very reminiscent of the Hylian Sheild from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess, as it follows the same design of the Hylian Shield. Motion control of the Shield is quite limited compared to the Sword, but it plays a vital roll in combat in nonetheless.

Wooden Shields

The wooden shield returns in Skyward Sword and will once again be the first form of defense for Link in the game. In Skyward Sword, through the use of Wii motion plus the nunchuk can be raised when in combat to block enemy melee attacks and can also be used when facing enemies with range attacks to deflect their projectiles. Enemy attacks will quickly damage your shield rendering it useless after only a small number of hits. While not confirmed the wooden sword's weakness of fire will most likely return in the newest Wii installment.

Due to its low resistance and from previous Zelda adventures it would seem that the wooden shield will be very cheap in comparison to its later upgrades. Due to its low dependency it would also be safe to assume that the price to have the wooden shield fixed when destroyed in battle will be more than affordable.

Iron Shields

The iron shield is the second shield encountered in Skyward Sword and offers a much greater resistance to attacks then that of the wooden shield. While melee attacks and projectiles can still be blocked through the use of the nunchuk the amount of damage sustained by the shield is largely reduced making it far more durable.

The price point of the Iron shield will far higher than that of the wooden shield, with more valuable and durable materials used to craft the shield, any potential buyer would have to fork over more than a few rupees to own it. With a much higher breaking point, the cost of fixing such a shield would also be much greater than that of the wooden shield.

Hylian Shields

The final shield in the game is the legendary Hylian shield used by heroes all across time, future and past. The Hylian Shield offers all of the functionality of the other two shields (once again through the use of Wii motion plus and the nunchuk) with a much greater resistance to enemy attacks and projectiles.

The Hylian Shield is the strongest shield that can be forged in Skyward Sword and so costs a fair chunk of your wallet to take home. On the plus side the Hylian Shield is the most dependable shield in the game taking an extremely low amount of damage in combat. The price to repair such a shield if it were ever to break would then surely be as high as the Hylian Shield's shield meter.
